Motorcraft Lower Radiator Hose NO -Oil Cooler

There would have to be something wrong with the system to collapse the hose with our big radiators. It's a closed system (it's returning water to the radiator at exactly the same rate as the pump draws it out), it's under pressure when it's warmed up, and the radiator will flow a ton of liquid. The hose is full of water, which, for all intents and purposes, is a solid. If the pump is able to evacuate the pressurized hose, that means there's a godsawful restriction in the radiator.

You don't need a spring in the lower hose in a properly operating system. As Steve said, it's only there for the factory fill because a vacuum is applied to the system so they don't have to go through the heat cycle and refill steps that we do. They were also necessary when cooling systems didn't use overflow reservoirs because the lower hose would collapse when the system cooled due to the air in the system. It won't hurt anything for it to be there, but it's also not something you should lose any sleep over if you buy a hose that doesn't have one.

All that said, I pulled the spring out of the factory hose and put it in the replacement when I eliminated the oil cooler. :hh:

I’m showing the non oil cooler lower hose being a f5tz8286b or motorcraft km2923.

Jamie: Is this the hose you bought on eBay that didn’t fit?

No KM-2411

Reason I ask is that F5TZ-8286-B or Motorcraft KM-2923 shows up in Dayco's cross-reference search as Dayco #71710 which is the one you said was an exact fit. So I think Lowetlx got it right in post #8 ^^^

Was hoping you bought that one and could confirm so I could add to parts list. I've got all the rest...

F5TZ-8286-B has been discontinued as have most of our parts. Greensales in Cincinnati shows to have one and one other place in Kansas. Possibly your local dealer could locate one.

One more time: Dayco 71040 is a perfect fit for a 5.0L/5.8L in these trucks w/o oil cooler. No trimming.

I'll try to remember to get pics of it & the OE lower hose in my '93 5.8L F250. Unfortunately, it has some wear on the PNs due to broken engine mounts.

Top is the '93 F250 5.8L; bottom is the '93 Bronco 5.8L:

(phone app link)

This is what RockAuto says the 71040 replaces:
E0TA8B273CA, E0TZ8286C, E2TA8B273RB, E2TA8B273RC, E2TA8N273RB, E2TZ8286C, E5TA8B273MA, E5TZ8286B, E5TZ8620B, E7TA8B273FA, E7TZ8286A, E9TA8B273VA, F0TZ8286D, F27A8B273NA, F2TA8B273NA, F2TZ8286G

This is the list for Gates 21216, which is one of the choices for my '93 F250 5.8L, and it includes the PN on its original hose:
1346495, 7927, CH1216, E0TA8286CC, E0TA8B273CA, E0TA8B273CB, E0TA8B273CD, E0TA8B273CE, E0TZ8286C, E2TA8B273RB, E2TA8B273RC, E2TZ8286C, E4TZ8286B, E5TA8B273MA, E5TZ8286B, E7TA8286FA, E7TA8B273FA, E7TZ8286A, E9TA8B273VA, F0TZ8286D, F2TA8B273NA, F2TE8B273NA, F2TZ8286D, F2TZ8286G, F3TA8B273NA, F4TA8B273ED, F4TA8B273RA, F4TA8B273RC, F5TA8B273YC, F5TA8B273YD, F5TZ8286B, MH1216

Note that the 2nd list contains most of the first, implying that all those PNs will work.

Dayco 71710 on Rock Auto says

Alternate/OEM Part Number(s): F4TA8B273EC, F4TA8B273ED, F4TZ8286A, F5TA8B273YA, F5TA8B273YD, F5TZ8286B

Do you know your truck's OE hose's PN?

Interesting that, even though the PNs are different, both hoses are marked "Motorcraft DF". I wonder if that identifies all OE hoses that fit this application. And I wonder why there were so many OE PNs; what was different about each one? And why were there 2 base PNs: 8B273, and 8286?

BTW
Why are you replacing it? It looks like it's still serviceable & clean (with a little scrubbing). Is there some damage not visible in the pic?
