Word to the wise ...
Inspect and test your manifold gauges FIRST.
Although I have no doubt that my initial refrigerant leak was due to a failed service valve, my follow up failures were a result of malfunctioning manifold gauges, not a lingering system repair problem.
After lamenting the likelihood of a larger A/C system failure I decided to look closer at my gauge set. Sure as sh** my 6 year old but BNIB gauge set was missing a hose seal gasket (stupid little piece of rubber tube).
I replaced the hose seal (all of them as a matter of fact), vac'd the system for about 90 minutes last evening, let it sit over night (gauge set attached) and wuh-duh-ya know ... the system held a vacuum over night.
