First engines built for SVT F-150 Lightning Pickup
WINDSOR, ONTARIO, Jan. 14, 1999 - Assembly of the first specially-designed, 5.4-litre, Triton V-8 engines for the Ford SVT F-150 Lightning pickup began today on the low volume line (LVL) at the Windsor Engine Plant Annex.
Officials of Ford's Special Vehicle Team (SVT) and Roush Engineering, which designed the supercharged and intercooled engine for the performance truck, were at the plant as employees assembled the first 24 of a total of 24,000 engines they will build for SVT F-150 Lightning pickups during the next six years.
The specially-designed engine can produce 360 horsepower and 440 foot-pounds of torque to enable the performance Ford pickup to reach a top speed of 140 mph. The January issue of Car and Driver Magazine features a prototype of the 1999 SVT F-150 pickup on its cover and describes it as, "The World's Fastest Truck".
The new SVT Lightning Pickup will be built at the company's Ontario Truck Plant in Oakville, Ontario, beginning Windsor Engine Plant Annex houses the Low Volume Line for production of specialty engines for Lightning, Mustang and Navigator as well as machining for regular production engines in the main building. Of the 2300 Windsor Engine Plant employees, 350 are located in the Annex and 200 of them work in engine assembly.
