what is converter lock up

Torque converte Lock Up 101:
Back in the day when the torque converter was first invented it was comlpetely driven off of fluid transfer. This had an efficiency rating about 85-90 percent. Then came the fuel crisis in the 70's, and more efficiency was a must. They added a clutch inside the torque converter that is activated by fluid. When you take off from a light the lock up clutch is off and you are being moved by fluid beng pumped from the converter pump to the turbine. Once you reach a certain speed the transmission opens a valve and fluid is applied to the lock up cluth, it engages on the front cover of the converter, giving you 100% transfer of power from the engine to the transmision. It will come on and go off as you are driving depending on how it is programed. Each transmission model is different, sometimes they apply the lock up clutch in second, sometimes they wait till fourth gear. A multi disk lock up clutch is just that, it actually has 2,3,4,5 clutch linings inside to increase the holding capacity when in lock up.
