The grand adventure from the Great Northwest #6

Just Dawdlin' along. In Boise, ID tonight. Comfortable temps once we arrived, around 74. Best Western Vista Inn at the Airport (why do they think they need such long names). NICE place especially for the coin charged. Hotel/motel taxes are 13% though ! Right next door is a Copper Kitchen with good food and pleasant prices.

Gas here was the same price as in Sultan; $3.27 with a 9 for premium though they deducted a point of octane....it's 91. First tank through netted a 15.95 MPG, second tank squeezed a bit more at 16.28 MPG for the Gen 2.

Had that pesky rain thing as we left town and it stayed with us until around Easton. After that the pavement was dry and as we came down the hill towards Ellensburg the sun wisked the clouds away for the rest of the day ! Weather guessers claim the rest of the trip to KC is in the sun !

Got a few pics but it's late here and as always the first day out means it was a short night before.

Keepin' an eye out for the NorCal guys as three of them are taking the same route we are. Nazgul is a day behind us he told me yesterday. Calightning and Gary are on I-80 and left the same day we did so we're looking for them too. Don't know for sure what there plans are for stopping but made sure they know our route and stop points via this thread. Corey (my94lightning) and Jen (95devilfairy) hit the road late this afternoon and are aiming for St. Joe on Wednesday eve. Josh and wife (HIVOLTJ) are meeting us in Cheyenne tomorrow afternoon so could be a lot or a few in St. Joe Wednesday ! Unless things change we'll aim for 7 PM (your time :D ) there.

Yeah, I still have your cell number in my phone, just so long as you didn't change it in the last 5 years !!

Rollin' along. Dusted off Washington, zipped on through Oregon, and stopped to hole up in Boise, ID yesterday.

Off we went this morn from Boise in brilliant sunshine eastbound. Hung a right around 60 miles east of Twin Falls to stay on I-84 and put Idaho behind us. On into Utah down to Ogden and made a left on a short segment of I-84 to connect with I-80. Finished off Utah and slid into Wyoming for about 90 miles. Stopped at Green River, WY for the night. Took a chance on a Oak Creek Inn motel. Nah, won't do them again. Kinda cross between a Super 8, Motel 6, and a Rodeway Inn. Rate isn't that great so scratch that chain off the list ! Even have a slowish internet connection so uploading pics would be a hours or days thing instead of minutes. Did get one pic of sunset stuff here in Green River. It is really a "WOW" moment coming around a bend on I-80 to see this large rock formation. Only got two closeups of one little area uploaded.

Same pic different shutter speed. Great what underexposure can do at the right time of day !

Maybe tomorrow night the Best Western in Ogallala will have a better internet connection ! I'm behind two days now on travelin' pics.

Ogallala means the Golden Spur with midwestern beef makin' up a Ribeye steak !

Meeting HIVOLTJ out of Montana just east of Cheyenne in the early afternoon.

Talked with Corey a little earlier and they are rollin' comin' up on Oregon on the same route we are taking. With good luck they should be able to have dinner in St. Joe with the rest of us there !

Work on gettin' some pics up 'cause it just ain't the same without "visual aids"

Made it to Ogallala, NE tonight. Easy drive from Green River, WY. Stopped just east of Cheyenne to meet with Josh and his wife Chelsea coming out of Montana. His White '94 L that once was baby2000's !

Got up in the air a bit today. Just out of Laramie, WY is the high point of I-80 at an altitude of 8640 feet. After that it's all downhill to Cheyenne and then on to Nebraska and the plains. Actually got a little hot today with the outside temp gauge showing 79 degrees ! This morn in Green River it was chilly with frost on the hoods and roofs of cars !!

Natch, the four of us had dinner at the Golden Spur and then Josh wanted to "tinker" with his L for a bit after dinner. One of his short tailpipes didn't wanna stay on like it should so he rolled around town here and found something to apply a fix with. Wouldn't ya know Jean snuck out of the room with camera and snapped a pic or two !!

Then on to sunshine the rest of the day. A quick stop at the first rest area in Idaho and a shot or two of the Snake river. You know, the river that forms part of the border between Washington, Idaho, and Oregon...

Next day it was off to Wyoming but first we had to run the width of Idaho and dip into Utah for a bit. Hung a left around Ogden to connect with I-80 and on into Wyoming to Green River for the night. NOT stopping at Green River again ! Rock Springs is just up the road about 23 miles and more/better motels there. 'Course Evanston, WY is a good stop too. It's just 3 miles into Wyoming and this time that was just too short to stop.

The first stop in Utah...just marvel at the mountain range that parallels I-84 along this stretch !

Josh here, checking in from ST. Joseph, all is well, and the turn-downs are staying on now, look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow afternoon in KC!

St. Joseph, MO. Last night on the road. We had a comfortable drive from Ogallala, NE this morn. Arrived at 5:20 PM in a rather warm afternoon sun. Corey, Jen, and James on the other hand had a miserable night in Cheyenne, WY and yet still managed to pull in to our motel an hour after us ! Yep, they made it !! Dave and Sharon met us here at the motel and all nine went next door to the CrackerBarrel restaurant for a leisurely dinner. I knew full well after dinner Corey, Jen, and James would head off to a well deserved full night's sleep. Josh and Chelsea excused themselves shortly thereafter which left Dave, Sharon, Jean, and I cuss and discuss things ! After about an hour chewin' the fat the waitress was gettin' really nervous so we figured we oughta go pay and be on our way.

Did manage to find Calightning on I-80 by pure chance. We were coming back onto I-80 at Kearney, NE and his truck with trailer went zooming by. Chased him down, pulled up alongside and waved, then dropped back to follow for awhile. Gave him a call and chatted while we rolled down the Interstate. He had to pull off for gas after about 30 miles, so we waved as we went by. For a short time there was 2 Gen 2's and 2 Gen 1's in caravan. Now there is one lonely Gen 2 and a gaggle of Gen 1's !! Two SuperCab conversions, one trailered turbo truck, and two more puttin' their tires to the pavement.

Pics, yeah you know there's pics......

In the morn we head over to a car wash about 3 blocks away to get'em presentable for their "Grand entrance to KC from their Grand Adventure from the Great Northwest" !! Corey and crew can definitely lay claim the the "Grand Adventure" part !

Great to have the Washingtonians all together with a couple of Montanians in the mix.

As nearly always a couple of minor gremlins infested the two Lightnings from Startup. Nothing major but....

I had lost a center cap from one of my wheels a couple of weeks back and after making some calls found out not only are the wheels not made anymore but neither are the center caps and no KMC, the wheel manufacturer, does not have any. Been hunting on eBay, local and not so local Craigslist, and some local wheel shops that handle KMC. Nope, non to be found so far.

First day out the two good ones I had left, one of them departed on either I-90 or I-82. Had taken off the rear wheels and cleaned up the axle ends and painted them with "chrome spray paint". Well, it's not really chrome paint just brighter silver. It would do in a pinch. One front one is gone now with the crusty hub showing. Gonna hunt some more for center caps but I suspect Moody Blue is gonna get a new foursome of shoes. They've been on there for 7 years so maybe time for a change but I sure do like those wheels !!

The other issue was with the SuperCab. Tuesday morn on startup Jean calls me over to listen to the new noise under the hood. Opened the hood and the blower is whinin'. Actually it's between a howl and squeal. Probably bearings do lets get that belt off. No sense sending little pieces of metal into the engine ! So I told her that the vacuum/boost gauge will read a little different now. When the needle gets to zero it just won't go any further no matter how hard ya push on the gas pedal !! After two additional days of driving she said this is not as much fun. Ya can't just stab the gas and go ! Ya actually have to plan your acceleration.....she misses her boost....

Yeah, there's some pics. Had a little help pullin' the belt off in 40 degree morning air that permeated Green River, WY.
