Recommend oil

Just purchase a 95 gen 1 with 150k miles and want to do the basic maintenance on the motor and trans.
I'm looking to install a new oil pump and with that, fresh oil. At 150k miles, which oil viscosity would you guys recommend? Should I go with a high volume oil pump or stock? Everything is stock. Any help would be appreciated.

You definitely don't want a high volume pump. I wouldn't do anything to a 150k mile motor unless it's knocking. That's not a mileage to be concerned about if it's had regular oil changes.

Get an oil pressure gauge as a starting point.

I run synthetic, high mileage 5w30 in both of my trucks (the 94 has 300k miles on it). I bounce between Valvoline and Mobil 1 depending on what's on sale. I use premium Wix filters.

Why do you want to replace the oil pump? Like Jeff said, "if it aint broke..." Plus you're pretty much looking at pulling the motor to do it, then you'll catch the Raymond virus and end up taking the whole truck apart before you know it :)

My ‘94 has 291K miles on it.

It’s been compression and leak-down tested a couple of times since I acquired it in 2009 … point being, it’s a quite healthy engine, despite the numbers, and I can’t bring myself to do anything that might compromise that.

I use high quality, name brand conventional 10W-30 and also the Wix filters, changing things religiously every 3000 miles. And with the mileage I put on the truck, that typically equates to a change about once every 10 years.

After I drive the truck, I can smell hot oil. Also, the needle on the dash doesn't move at all after turning the truck on. It could be the oil sensor.

Another vote for leave the oil pump alone. The oil pump is the most overlubricated part in the entire engine. They just don't go out that often. Put a manual gauge on it and see what the oil pressure actually is. If it's really zero it probably means you need more than an oil pump. A hot oil smell has nothing to do with the oil pump. It's probably oil leaking on the exhaust.

As for what oil to run, that question will start a war on about any internet forum you ask it on. In the end it really doesn't matter. Any high quality oil with an API certification mark on it will be fine. An argument could be made that an oil with an additive for a flat tappet cam is beneficial, but that is debatable. If the cam has been running happily for 150k miles it's well broken in and will probably be fine for a long time. If you're in a hot area 5W30, 10W30 or 10W40 will all probably serve you well. If you're in a cooler area I'd probably lean on the lighter oils or in a hot area the two heavier ones. I run Castrol GTX High Mileage 20W50 in my daily driver and it seems pretty happy with it. I started with 10W30 and have worked my way up to 20W50 in a variety of brands as the engine has gotten older. It's at 540k now and could use a going through. It's a 300, not a 351, but the two were built on the same technology.
