As the undisputed champion in the sport truck segment, the third-generation 2003 SVT F-150 Lightning carries on with upgrades that continue to up the ante. Setting the standard in acceleration, handling and attitude, the 2003 SVT F-150 Lightning hammers into its eighth year of production as the world's fastest factory-produced pickup. The SVT F-150 Lightning is produced in Oakville, Ontario, Canada.

Design

The 2003 SVT Lightning has several distinct exterior features that set it apart from the rest of the F-150 lineup. Crystalline headlamps, clear turn signal lenses and SVT-signature round fog lamps in the vehicle's unique front fascia project the Lightning's attitude to the unsuspecting. The face is complemented by unique clear taillamp lenses and a light-emitting diode high-mounted stop light. Lower rocker extensions, side-exit exhaust and a unique 18- by 9.5-inch five-spoke wheel/tire package further distance the SVT Lightning from other F-150's.

Inside, the Lightning has a 60/40-split bench front seat with improved side bolsters for better lateral support for spirited driving. Seating surfaces have Preferred Suede trim with textured Nudo Leather inserts with the SVT logo embroidered on the backrest. New for 2003 is the brushed aluminum finish on the interior door handles, a new steering wheel with perforated leather and unique air bag cover. A new plush high-pile carpet material increases wear resistance and improves sound insulation.

Also new for 2003 is the six-disc in-dash AM/FM/CD stereo with improved equalization for better sound quality and convenient CD changes.

New exterior color choices for 2003 include Dark Shadow Gray and Sonic Blue. Other colors available include Oxford White Clearcoat, Bright Red Clearcoat and Black Clearcoat.

Powertrain

A 5.4-liter SOHC Tritonª V-8 powers the 2003 SVT F-150 Lightning. The Tritonª V-8 is mated with an Eatonª GEN IV supercharger that breathes through an intercooler, providing 380 horsepower at 4,750 rpm and 450 foot-pounds of torque at 3,250 rpm.

Transferring the power to the wheels is a four-speed automatic transmission, strengthened with the same internals used behind Ford's PowerStrokeª diesel. Routed through an aluminum driveshaft for increased strength, power is then transformed into acceleration by a 9-inch traction-lock differential with a 3.73:1 gear ratio.

Suspension, Brakes

The 2003 SVT F-150 benefits from improved chassis tuning for outstanding handling. Bilstein gas-charged shocks are the damper of choice at all four corners for their excellent control and ride characteristics. Unique chassis tuning also lowers the Lightning 2 inches in the rear and 1.5 inches in the front to improve the handling and give a more aggressive appearance.

The steering gear is revalved for 2003 and has better on-center feel and reduced lash.

There have also been some minor tweaks in the chassis tuning for 2003. The changes have increased the Lightning's cargo capacity from 800 pounds in 2002 to 1,400 pounds in 2003.

The brakes have larger front rotors that measure 12 inches in diameter with 13-inch rear discs. A four-wheel anti-lock brake system is standard. The SVT Lightning also features unique brake pad material to assist in heat dissipation and improve wear characteristics.

Safety and Security

The 2003 SVT F-150 Lightning's inherently well-balanced chassis, responsive steering and powerful anti-lock brakes provide the first measure of defense in emergencies: controllability. There also are driver and passenger front air bags with an on/off switch for the passenger-side air bag, and BeltMinderª, which chimes to remind the driver to buckle up.

Providing a sense of security from dead batteries and theft, the Lightning also features SecuriLockª, which requires the use of a coded key to start the vehicle and a battery saver feature that turns off lights and accessories if they are left on for more than 10 minutes.

FORD SVT F-150 LIGHTNING EARNS THE TITLE "WORLD'S FASTEST PRODUCTION PICKUP" ACCORDING TO GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™

* Guinness World Records, Ltd. certifies the 2003 Ford SVT F-150 Lightning as "World's Fastest Production Pickup Truck."
* "Off the showroom floor" Ford SVT F-150 Lightning reached over 147 mph.

DEARBORN, Mich. - August 13, 2003 - Today, the Ford SVT F-150 Lightning was certified as the "World's Fastest Production Pickup Truck" by Guinness World Records, Ltd. after reaching 147 miles per hour at Ford's test track. Since the truck's introduction in 1999, the supercharged SVT Lightning has been unofficially called the world's fastest pickup by numerous media outlets. Now it's a matter of official record.

"We're proud to have certification from Guinness World Records," says Tom Scarpello, Ford SVT marketing and sales manager. "It is a well-deserved record for the engineering team, and overdue confirmation to all the SVT F-150 Lightning owners out there who have known for years that they drive the fastest truck on the planet!"

The record run was conducted on the Michigan Proving Grounds of Ford Motor Company. The five-mile-long, high-speed oval provided a safe, controlled environment to test the limits of truck's performance.

"This may seem like fun and games, but high-speed stability is critical for a performance vehicle, even a pickup truck," says Tom Chapman, Ford SVT chassis systems supervisor and driver for the record-setting run. "The SVT F-150 Lightning is just as stable and planted at 147 miles per hour as it is at 55 mph; only the scenery's going by faster. That stability is a testament to the solid foundation of the Ford F-150, and the performance engineering found in Ford SVT products."

For the record, Guinness requires the truck to be production level, meaning it is identical to what a customer can find at his local Ford SVT dealer. Speeds must be measured over a kilometer, and the record speed is derived from an average of speeds in both directions.

To meet the vehicle requirements, Ford SVT used a stock 2003 Ford SVT F-150 Lightning. Exterior modifications were limited to folding in the side mirrors, and removing the radio antenna. To meet timing requirements, Ford SVT conducted the test on Ford's Michigan Proving Ground high-speed oval. Timing lights were set up seven-tenths of a mile apart (as certified by an independent surveyor). A Hot Lap In-Car Timer, from Longacre Racing Products, was used to measure elapsed time through the measured 0.7 mile. Elapsed time was then converted to miles per hour.

Clockwise, the fastest elapsed time was 17.03 seconds, or 147.974 mph. Counter-clockwise, the fastest elapsed time was 17.09 seconds, or 147.454 mph.

The average of those two runs is 147.714 mph.

This result is more than adequate to set the Guinness World Record™ for the "Fastest Production Pickup."

The supercharged SVT F-150 Lightning was introduced in 1999, with 360 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque. In their January 1999 issue, Car and Driver magazine reported, "Ford SVT builds the world's fastest pickup."

Since then, engine modifications have improved performance, bringing output up to 380 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque. In their most recent editorial evaluation, the July 2003 issue of Motor Trend reported a terminal speed of 146 mph in a 2003 Ford SVT F-150 Lightning.

For Tom Scarpello, the Guinness World Record™ solidifies the Ford SVT F-150 Lightning as the one, the only, and the best performance pickup truck in the world.

"Capable of acceleration from 0-60 mph in 5.2 seconds, and reaching 147 mph, the SVT Lightning is the dominant sport pickup in the world," says Scarpello. "No pickup truck on the market today can come close to matching those numbers. And, the SVT Lightning does all this and still can tow a 5,000 pound trailer and carry 1,300 pounds of payload. But best of all, this is no concept vehicle--it's available right now from your local Ford SVT dealer."

Ford SVT history
The Ford Special Vehicle Team (SVT) was established in 1991 to "polish the Ford oval," by creating low-volume, factory-produced vehicles designed for those whose idea of driving is a high-powered, passionate experience – not just a means of getting from point A to point B.

In a move to support this spirited enthusiasm, Ford Motor Company carefully integrated the wide array of talent in the company into a small, cross-functional group of engineers, product planners and marketing people, housed together under one roof with a common mission – to create vehicles specifically designed to meet the unique needs and desires of the knowledgeable driving enthusiast.

Each SVT vehicle produced since the 1993 model year has been designed and developed with the four SVT Hallmarks in mind: Performance, Substance, Exclusivity and Value. These hallmarks have driven the SVT Mustang Cobra and Cobra R, the SVT F-150 Lightning, the SVT Contour and the SVT Focus.

2003 F-150 LIGHTNING

The Ford SVT F-150 Lightning romped through 2003 still firmly atop the sport truck market after being certified as the “World's Fastest Production Pickup Truck” by Guinness World Records, Ltd. While it’s true various media outlets have given the SVT Lightning the “fastest pickup” crown ever since the second-generation truck's introduction in 1999, it became a matter of official record when a stock Lightning reached 147 miles per hour on a test track. A redesigned five-spoke alloy wheel, satin-chrome interior door handles and two brand-new paint colors – Sonic Blue Clearcoat (replacing True Blue) and Dark Shadow Gray Clearcoat (replacing Silver Metallic) – were introduced for ’03. Plus, thanks to some new suspension tuning, Lightning's payload rating was increased to 1,350 pounds.
