Crank no start

I need help going through the steps for crank no start as I get to the step checking the coil with the coil signal wire unplugged like the article says to I don't get the 10 to 12v the article said I would but when I plug the signal wire back into the coil an test it on the back side of the plug I get 12v thinking bad contactor unplugged the signal wires again an tested on the back side of the plug no power until everything is plugged into the coil really could use some help with this
