April 2011 Truck Of The Month – Congratulations Rob (giddyup) Hagar ! (NLOC #2230)
This months TOTM hails from the Lone Star State, Texas. Those many people on NLOC know well the screen name ! Residing in Gatesville Rob makes his living plying the Interstates of the U.S. As owner/operator of an eighteen wheeler Rob finds himself on the road more than he’d like. Time on the road doesn’t allow for tinkering with his truck ! When he is home he’s making the most of his time for improvements to his 1994 Lightning. Sometimes just running out of time to complete a major project a good friend and previous TOTM Turbodgumby lent a MAJOR helping hand in finishing up Rob’s turbo project. While Rob certainly gets help from time to time his truck reflects his attention to detail, and insistence for quality work; whether he is turning the wrenches or others are on his behalf ! This is one attention getter as well as a quick truck.
Read on to learn more about Rob and his Lightning then join in the congratulations to Rob Hagar !
1. What sparked your interest in the Ford Lightning?
I loved the Lightnings every since I first saw one in the Mustang rags. At the time I was driving an ‘86 Mustang GT, and really needed another pickup. The wife and I had just traded my ‘97 F-150 in, and bought her a new 98 GT. The ‘97 was a V6, and I wanted something with more power. I was out cruising around, looking at the local car lots, when I spotted an all black F-150. I thought to myself, "dang that looks just like a Lightning". I spun around, and checked her out. Sure enough, it was a black ‘94 with aftermarket wheels and no bedside decals. I went home, and got the title to the ‘86, the rest is history.
2. Do you have any interesting stories about previously owned vehicles, before becoming a Lightning owner?
I can't think of any previous to owning my first Lightning, but one comes to mind right after I bought my black ‘94 back in ‘98. I took a trip to see my parents around Christmas. My brother and I got a little restless, so we decided to take a spin around town. I ran into an old high school friend, who just so happened to get himself a teal ‘93 Cobra. After a few choice words, we proceeded to line up at the red light on the main drag. Light turns green and it's on, I got him by a truck to the next light. We did it another 3-4 times, each time ending the same as the first. I got accused of spraying the truck, which I hadn't, but I will never forget that night.
3. What modifications have you made to your truck since you have owned it...both show and go?
PTS turbo kit, with a PT76GTSH turbo. Famous Ed's battery cables, mass air conversion, and electric fan setup. Gumby's ported stock GT40 heads, and lower intake. LVL 10 trans,LFP 2400 stall. ‘01 gen 2 wheels. AFM PMS tuner, and probably a ton of stuff I have forgotten.
4. Do you have any interesting stories about your Lightning?
I think the one story that makes me smile the most, is semifinals in street Lightning at Lfest #6. I was lined up against Vern. I managed to tree him, but ended up losing to him on the big end by .004. It was the best time I have ever had on a track. We where literally door to door all the way down the track. I took 3rd, and Vern got Blake in the finals to grab the top spot.
5. Tell us about yourself, your hobbies, business or work, sports, family, etc.
I'm an Over The Road driver. I own/operate my own Peterbilt. Guess I shouldn't say I, my wife also runs the truck as well. We have been doing this together for 10 years, this fall. We are on our 3rd truck, the current one just rolled 1 million miles a few weeks ago.
Far as hobbies go, I enjoy wrenching on my vehicles. Riding ATVs, and running my nitro power trucks, and helo. In ‘09 I got a chance to meet some fellow Lightning owners in Washington state. Corey(my94lightning) and I where talking one night in chat about finding a decent F-250. He jumped on craigslist and found a super nice ‘94. I sent him the money and arranged to fly in ,and Corey would pick me up. When I got there, Corey was telling me how they where heading to Oregon to go ride the banshee's in the dunes. So, of course the wife and I had to tag along.
6. How long have you been a user of the NLOC.net, when did you become an NLOC member, and why did you choose to become a member of NLOC?
I started surfing the site back in ‘02, but didn't register until I started looking for my next Gen 1. I became a member because of the really close group of people on this site. It was a big step up from the Mustang crowd I was in. Plus with all the info on here, I might as well pay my part to use it.

7. What suggestions do you have to make the NLOC.net website easier to use and navigate?
Everything around here seems to flow pretty well. The only main gripe I have is the classified section. I frequent numerous boards on a daily basis, and this one seems to be the only one with this classified setup. I just simply don't care for it. I don't like getting scammer emails when I post something for sale, and also don't like that there are parts posted going back a year or more. That stuff needs to be deleted. I wish we could go back to the forum style posting.
8. Why did you pick your board user name (screen name)?
When I started back into the modding hobby, I wanted my plate on my mustang to read Giddyup. Being in Texas with a Mustang, pretty much every version of that has been put on a plate. So I used decided to use it when I registered on forums. So the name stuck, and I use it just about anywhere that requires a screen name.
9. What are your plans for future changes to your truck?
Brakes, and some kind of suspension upgrade. A bbf swap still hasn't left my mind yet...so who knows on that one.
10. Whom would you like to thank for help\donations\support for putting the truck together?
A lot of guys on here helped me in a lot of different ways. With that said, I think one stands out from the rest. Gumby has gone out of his way to help me out numerous times, and without his help, I wouldn't have a running truck currently. He even came and picked it up and towed it to his shop to complete it.
