On to the next mod...

...the Expy center console. This probably will be one of the "longer" ongoing threads ! Got started last night and did a little more tonight. Pics are worth WAY more than just text....

Passenger side seat is out and this is the area for the front mount for the console.

Front mount. The mount uses one of the seat hold downs

Line up the drivers side hole in the mount to the seat bolt hole...

Outline the mount on the carpet (I used a Sharpie felt tip) and cut...

Ford thoughtfully provided the "other" hole needed for both the front and rear mounts for the console. A rubber plug is installed in both the front and rear passenger side holes. Remove the plug and tap the insert in the floorpan. 12 MM X 1.75 for the rear, 10 MM X 1.50 for the front. Pictured is the rear mount.

Front and rear mounts installed waiting for the console !

"Skeleton" installed on the mounts.

Skeleton you ask ? It's the frame for the center console that all the console panels attach to. Here's the top, bottom, and side view in case your interested.

A couple of "little detail" items I've noticed from lots of reading and viewing a few consoles installed in other trucks. The front of the skeleton will show slightly after both side panels are installed on it. The drivers side will hit the plastic cover for the center floor heat register on the drivers side. Just a little trimming at the front of the skeleton will resolve both issues.

Passenger side...

Drivers side...

"Spare parts" so far. 4 seat bolts, 1 seat belt bolt, and half the center seat belt.

Oh yeah, one other "spare part". 'Course this spare part does get used after it's modified a bit.

Nothing earth shattering here, just got the outer panels out and lined them up for some pictures. All these have to be painted grey and some are gonna get squirted black. Time to get the scrub brush out and get these panels clean and ready for paint. All the pieces front to back...

All the pieces back to front...

The inside of the passenger side panel. The map pocket is attached by melting the tabs coming through the main panel...

The back panel with the cup holder assemby. The cup holder assembly will stay black, the rest gets squirted. This console had the rear audio controls as well as rear HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) controls. The insert for the audio controls and HVAC can have the innards removed leaving just the outer piece that screws into the backside of the panel. A thin piece of plastic or aluminum can be glued to the existing piece to fill the holes nicely. The audio control insert has already had the electronics removed and only the faceplate remains.

The front top piece. These vary depending on the model of Expy the console came out of. This one was apparantly a top of the line model as it has the HVAC controls and a "button" between the cupholders as well.

The main storage compartment. This one has a wide slot cut in the middle of it as does the skeleton. Suppose something went there like perhaps a CD changer. Side and top views.

The back panel again with the cupholder cover...

The cupholders that attach to the back side of the cover...

Underside of the main storage compartment lid...

The lid. You can see why most want to recover the lid. It's just not very good looking with those two seams...

Underside of the top front panel...

Oh, and Dale, I didn't get to "dessert" tonight. Like most all the time for me my planned jobs for the night take longer than anticipated. I did get this collection of junk up though....

Don't have all the Chevron Car stuff but pretty sure I've got all the cars, and a couple of packages of the cookies, and the CD and the cardboard garage carrier....

Hey, drive was great after we got south of SLC !! Thanks for gettin' us outa your town and on the right road to Salina. From Salina all the way to Colorado was FABULOUS road and sunny skies. We picked up Roy (Super Cab L) in Salina and he tagged along with us to Denver. We just REALLY enjoy the San Rafael Swell area. Think we stopped at 6 ot 7 of the viewing areas before we finally got through it !

Not much tonight either. Used the rear cupholder cover to practice with the paint. Duplicolor brand. Stayiing with the same manufacturer I used their plastic adhesion promoter spray as well as the color. This stuff dries REAL fast. The adhesion promoter stated to shoot the color within 10 minutes of the last coat of adhesion promoter. My color combo is black with dark grey sides so this piece was shot in black. Color coat dries real fast too. I could start handling the parts for assembly in about a half hour. Pics...

Picture shot with flash open on camera...

Without flash...

Rear cupholder in the rear panel of the console, top view...

Side view...

Now I gotta get all the pieces prepped and painted and do a little assembly for fitting and trimming...

Yeah, Dale I take as long fiddlin' with this as you do with a D/S hoop but you know how it is......fit and check, fit and check, modify slightly, fit and check, fit and check....all without a manual or nuttin, including peanut butter, but I did have a piece of Marionberry pie tonight.....!

I just had no idea it was that involved. (lots of parts) I'm used to those old consoles out of a fairlane or somthin that are one piece plastic.

Marionberry huh ?.....how did you know that was my favorite ?.....well one of the top 3 or so anyway
