Talking Idea

Scott if you would like to have the lightning word and symbol stitched into the arm rest or some where else let me know. I had mine done at Great Northern in Everett and had to pay the initial art charge.

So now any future work I have done only costs for material and labor. They can adjust the symbology to any size and stitched on most all materials.

PS that goes for all you other WASHLO guys.

Hey Brad ! You'll just LOVE the mod !! This is one of those changes to the interior that just belongs there. Not difficult either, just a little time consuming for me since I'm Mr. slowpoke.

shot the black on all the pieces tonight and got the pieces cleaned for the dark grey. With luck it should be partially assembled and starting the fitting process in the cab by the weekend. There's a little trimming to do at the front and I'm pretty sure a little notching to do on the storage compartment that is behind the seat.

Thanks Carson ! The storage compartment lid DEFINITELY has to get recovered. It's ugly from the factory.

Here's one idea I've seen that I like...

That would look good in my 04 if I didn't have the 4X4 shifter down there.

I changed her oil on Saturday and while she was drain'n I was look'n at my lists posted on the cabnet door... It's on my 'get'r done' list. Along with my list of parts I need to order (L&S, alignment bolts,........) and inside the cabnet holds the parts I already have needing instal like the gaskets and front springs (the ones Dale sold me over a year ago)etc......

Last night was just a bunch of cleaning of parts to get ready for paint. Tonight was painting just about all the rest of the parts. Got some pics and a few suggestions along the way...

First suggestion is to get TWO cans of each color and TWO cans of adhesion promoter if changing the entire console color. If you're only painting the entire console one color then get 3 cans of color. Better to have a little left over than come up short ! For those interested, I used Duplicolor brand. Part number HVP106 flat black, HVP111 charcoal grey, and CP199 adhesion promoter.

The two side pieces, one with the map pocket set in place temporarily.

Closeup of the backside of the map pocket area on the side panel.

Backside of map pocket on the side piece. Didn't find a "good" way to separate the map pockets from the side piece. Ended up using a dremel tool to separate the studs of the map pocket from the side panel. The map pocket is installed at the factory and the studs of the map pocket are melted on the backside of the side piece.

The back panel with the two bumpers and latch for the cupholders ready to install. The audio and HVAC control modules have been gutted and the faceplates installed temporarily.

Installed.

Top piece painted.

One of those suggestions. If changing color of the console paint the underside around all the edges so the "wrong" color won't show up after assembly.

Especially where the now gutted modules screw in. These are not tight fitting pieces.

Another one of those suggestions. Up here in the northern states it gets cold. Paint usually will list a temperature range for use. Putting the can in a container of hot water will get the paint up to temperature and warm paint flows better !

The backside of a side panel painted.

The back panel finished up.

Step one of reassambly. Attach the main storage compartment to the skeleton with 4 screws.

As mentioned before this one has a hole cut out in the center of the storage compartment and the skeleton. The skeleton maintains it's rigidity but the rubber mat that goes in the floor of the storage compartment isn't strong enough. A piece of material will be needed to solve that problem. Any number of materials can be used. I happen to have a piece of 1/4 inch ply I'll cut to fit. For a pattern, just use the bottom of the rubber mat. It will require a few holes be bored in the ply to accomodate the attachment screws.

Wow ! No, it's not ready to install yet. I just pieced together a side piece and set the top piece on to get an early look at the console. Still lots of work to be done.

What are you going to do with the extra a/c knobs Scott.

That adhesion promotor is the same stuff I have been using in the engine bay, seems to help a lot.

A little more progress tonight. Assembled the sides again to the skeleton to mark and cut the offending part of the skeleton at the front so as to not interfere with the cover for the floor heat register. Also notched the cargo box to clear the rear of the console and made a floor for the main storage compartment.

Here's a note. If your console has the rear cupholders and your truck has the cargo box don't spend any time on the cupholders. If needed just paint the cupholder cover and reassemble. It won't open with the cargo box in place. If your truck does not have the cargo box at the rear of the cab the cupholders will open and can be used for sumthin...

Pics...
The small part of the skeleton that extends past the side panel, driver side.

Passenger side. This just barely extends past the side panel. Very little to remove. Marked the area to cut and used the trusty little dremel tool with a cutoff wheel. After the cut a light sanding with a sanding block, round the sharp corners just a little and it's done.

Before and after on the driver side of the skeleton.

Passenger side.

The cargo box with lines drawn for the cut.

The cut.

Cargo box fitted and clearance around back of console.

Floor cut for the bottom of the main storage compartment. Nothing pretty here it just needs to create a solid floor for the rubber mat to sit on. Have to relieve for the screws that attach the storage compartment to skeleton.

Plywood is covered up with the rubber mat.

Another area to address is the gap between the carpet and the bottom of the console at the front. Others have used the carpet that was cut out for the mounts and stuffed those under the carpet to raise it. Something to fiddle with tomorrow night. Passenger side gap.

Driver side gap.

That's it for tonight.
