Exclamation Help Getting Started On Turbo Build

I own a 1993 Gen 1 Lightning. 127,000+

Completely stock with a Bassani exhaust.

Now I am mechanically challenged and have only successfully changed my own oil, replaced a fog light bulb, and thats it!

I know, pathetic. Dissapointment.

So I'm asking nicely.

I want to know how to get started. What I need. What does what. etc.
Everything! I know what a turbo is and it's main purpose but what boost is and setting and I dont know, I get lost after that.

I'll let the pro's help me out.

Thanks guys!

Wow im surprised how quick of a response I got on this. Thanks "projlightning". That gave me more of an understanding. I might as well hit the books and gain more experience before I get to ahead of myself.

Thanks!

just got done reading that book, I really liked it.
a definate read, if going turbo.
any other books of that caliber out there?
I assume the "how stuff works book" would just be a simpler version right?

8 months ago I decided to go back and read all posts in this forum and yes it took me quite awhile, but I feel I learned alot reading about all the trial and error that was done here, just read quickly through all the "pro turbo posts" lots of drama happened there, read it so you know, but just skim it.
good luck and happy reading.

another bonus of reading all the posts is you can get an idea of the people that know what there talking about and who to listen the most to when unsure about something.

there is a TON of great info on The Turbo Forums.com. Browse through the newbe section there are plenty of great links. This is my favorite place to get parts. :: Hyperformance Motorsports Racing ::. And you MUST go buy maximum boost by corley bell.. Kinda older material but it sure teaches you a lot.. I was like you when I started and now I really know a lot more because of that book and just reading everything I could find about turbos. I'm pretty sure there is a new book similar to maximum boost that's coming out soon but I cannot remember the name... Also Do Not be scared to ask questions!!

Corky Bell has been well respected forever in the performance world. Mainstream use of turbos is a recent occurance, but turbocharging has been done forever. Don't worry that the book is a bit dated. The physics do not change. Only thing is we have a lot more choices for hardware than ever before(a very good thing).
