| Moderator Paid Member | June 2008 Gen 1 TOTM(s) – Congratulations Mike "Mike Mck" & Bryce "badpony93" June 2008 Gen 1 Truck(s) Of The Month – Congratulations Mike "Mike Mck" & Bryce "badpony93" McKindles (NLOC#'s 2598 & 2497). In observance of Father's Day this month we are featuring a father/son duo from Arizona. Mike has a clean black 94 and Bryce has a mean red 94. Congrats to Mike and Bryce for being June’s Truck(s) of The Month! ![]() 1. What sparked your interest in the Ford Lightning? Mike: Bryce got me interested by selling a beautiful 93 Eddie Bauer Bronco we bought to buy his 93 lightning. I thought he was crazy selling the lifted Bronco for a 2 wheel drive F150. Until I drove his. The sickness began. Bryce: I was working at a repair shop about 2 years ago when a red gen 1 came in for an alignment. I test drove it and that was it, I had to have one. ![]() 2. Do you have any interesting stories about previously owned vehicles, before becoming a Lightning owner? Mike: I once owned a 1 ton suburban which was used to transport baseball teams around the country to tournaments. Bryce got T boned in it which totaled the truck but everybody walked away. Used the money from that to buy the 93 Bronco. Motor lasted about a year. Lesson learned by Bryce. Don’t enter a mud hole at 4000 RPM’s with a fuel injected engine. 1st of 3 engines in the truck. Sold it for the first Lightning. Bryce: I bought a 1993 Eddie Bauer Bronco when I was a senior in high school. 4'' lift 35'' mud terrains, and I took it off-road one night and sucked in about 2 gallons of water. We replaced the motor and it ran great for 3000 miles then a bad head gasket blew up the radiator and warped the heads. Now onto motor number 2. It lost oil pressure and was leaking coolant from the side of the block. Then about the time motor number 3 was finally up and running was when the red gen 1 showed up to make me change my mind. so the bronco sold and I rode the greyhound bus 30 hours to Missouri to buy my black 93 ![]() 3. What modifications have you made to your truck since you have owned it...both show and go? Mike: Had the truck for a few months. My daughter was driving when a water pump bolt let go. Brought the truck home to replace the pump and broke off a second bolt. While trying to remove the busted bolt we managed to break the easy out. As Bryce and I stood there scratching our heads we decided “as long as we are in here” an engine swap was in order. Enter Greg (dogman) who had a mildly built long block that fit nicely. 285 RWHP and around 400 torque. A couple of months ago a yellow extended cab lightning showed up in my driveway and we did a vortech transplant to my truck. Got a little quicker. ![]() Bryce: All forged 408 shortblock 8.5.1 comp. Trickflow R intake (not box) AFR 185's with a little port work 1 5/8'' long tube headers 3'' exhaust with Dynomax ultraflow welded mufflers Crane Cam 1.6 rr's MSD box Detroit Locker in the rear with stock 4.10's Rancho bars by the time this is up it will have a fresh Hughes built E4OD Hughes 3000 single disc converter Vortech s-trim sumped fuel tank with 2 255 pumps bigger fuel rails 42# squirter's pmas/pro-m MA Holley afpr It has gone a best of 11.72@113.98 with a 1.56 60' ![]() Not much on the show side: Cervini's cowl hood. black and red Ford Racing valve covers and I painted the upper intake to match. I run the racelines on the street--15x7 up front with 205/75 15's and 15x10 in the rear with 315/60 15 MT street radials or MT et drag 29x10.5w's if I'm getting serious. ![]() 4. Do you have any interesting stories about your Lightning? Mike: From the first day I drove Bryce’s 93 I was hooked and started looking. We found a situation where we could help out a fellow lightning owner and acquire a Gen 1. BLKDVL had blown the motor in his SVT Contour and was selling his truck to cover the costs. Bryce and I made a deal to bring out a Ford remanufactured SVT Contour motor to Pismo beach and install it for him in return for his truck. Worked out great for all. Bryce worked his a** off all weekend as I strolled around the Pismo Beach Car Show and got to drive one of the cleanest Gen 1’s around home. Steve (BLKDVL) runs a detail shop so it was Clean! It was fun making the run home with Bryce driving his Black 93 and me in the black 94. Did a few flybys of ricers with 1 lightning on each side. Another story would be Bryce and I driving the 1300 miles from Phoenix for last years Lightning fest. We both managed to get pulled over but only I got a ticket. Interesting conversation with the officer. Asked where we were going and we told him a drag race. He suggested we should wait till we got there to start racing. A good guy as he said “ keep it under 85 and we will get along fine.” ![]() Bryce: I have one before I bought my first one. When I told my dad I was going to sell my bronco and buy a lightning. He told me it was a dumb idea to sell a 4 wheel drive bronco for a 2 wheel drive pickup. Long story short, I got my black 93 home and took him to lunch. A few months later we were on our way to cali. to buy BLKDVL's 94 ![]() second. My dad and I went to Pennsylvania to buy the red 94. On the initial test drive the fan ripped the front of the water pump off destroyed the fan shroud and went half way through the radiator. we bought it for cheaper and I fixed it in the guys driveway. We made it to Oklahoma when the oil pressure dropped and started spewing blue smoke all over the turnpike. So we sucked it up and drove it the rest of the way home to phx, AZ with the #7 piston cracked and a cam lobe wiped out. ![]() ![]() 5. Tell us about yourself, your hobbies, business or work, sports, family, etc. Mike: Father of 3 and between us own 5 F series trucks. 2 94 lightnings 1 94 F350 1 92 Bronco 1 2002 HD Bryce is my oldest and most expensive. Lightning mods is an addiction. Son #2 Devin, has just gotten the go fast disease and bought a 2002 HD F150. Child 3 is daughter Meghan who is currently playing college Volleyball here in AZ and driving the F350 crewcab with 7” of lift and 35’s I’m currently With Honeywell Engines and Systems in their supply chain organization for Castings, forgings and airfoils. I Also run a sports photography business. Look for us at L fest this year. Bryce: My name is Bryce, I'm 23, I have been with my girlfriend Krista for almost 7 years now, no kids but we do have a 3 yr old golden retriever named miller . I'm a mechanic at local repair shop. I've been working on cars ever since my dad could point a stick. Our trucks pretty much take up a lot of free time. I play beer league softball a couple nights a week and that's about it.![]() 6. How long have you been a user of the NLOC.net, when did you become an NLOC member, and why did you choose to become a member of NLOC? Mike: Been using the site for a couple of years. Classifieds have been the lifeblood of our addiction. All 3 trucks Gen 1’s and a bunch of go fast stuff was located from the site. Bryce: I've been a user for a couple years, back when I was building my bronco I was secretly picking everybody's brain. I joined a few months ago to do what I can to help out the site. The people here are great and extremely helpful. ![]() 7. What suggestions do you have to make the NLOC.net website easier to use and navigate? Mike: It works fine for me Bryce: It's actually very easy to navigate through the site. I'm just not much a fan of the classifieds ![]() 8. Why did you pick your board user name (screen name)? Mike: It’s my name. Bryce: When I first signed up I owned the 93 bronco which was a pretty bad machine if I do say so myself so badpony93 was it. L-R Bryce, Mike, and Andrew(tbonemcniel) 9. What are your plans for future changes to your truck? Mike: No real plans for my truck but more mods for Bryce’s. A Hughes trans is next than an intercooler. There is a Nitrous kit just sitting in the garage. HMMM Bryce: Slap a roll pan on, triple disc converter, intercooler, bigger blower with more boost, bigger injectors, bigger heads, bigger cam, take some weight out of it, I'll probably have to get a bar in it soon, maybe a paint job somewhere down the road, and I might try and buy my old 93 back from Tbone so I can get a little more serious with the red truck ![]() 10. This is where you link favorite websites, your website, family pictures and add any other comments. Mike: Gotta be Bryce for the hours he puts in wrenching on all the family trucks. Bryce: First I would like to thank my dad, the truck wouldn't be where it is without his loans. My girlfriend Krista for putting up with the obsession, and hanging out at the track with me. Rob and Greg for your knowledge and old parts and getting this thing down the track. 8yurss for building my fuel system and testing it on his truck first ![]() Congratulations to Mike and Bryce and their 1994 Black and Red Ford Lightning's for Gen 1 Truck(s) of the Month, June 2008! |
