| Moderator Paid Member | May 2007 Gen 2 TOTM - Congratulations to Brian "35thPony" ! (NLOC #1588) May 2007 Gen 2 Truck Of The Month – Congratulations Brian "35thPony” ! (NLOC #1588) The truck selected for May TOTM is a 2000 model out of North Carolina ! Brian’s truck is one of the Lightnings actively participating in the newest trend in making horsepower. Turbocharging ! Just recently Brian saw 672 horsepower and 753 foot-pounds of torque on a DynoJet dyno at 18 PSI ! NLOC managed to get Brian to put down his radar gun long enough to answer our questions about himself and his turbo Lightning ! Have a read… ![]() 1. What sparked your interest in the Ford Lightning? I have always liked the performance sport trucks since my dad bought a Typhoon in 1992. I was in high school and remember how great it felt to be faster than everything else on the road and no one knew it until it was too late. I then went off to college at N.C. State and started getting into cars of my own and owned a few Mustangs. I modified them, but I was not happy with the performance against f-bodies and some other vehicles. I had liked the style and performance of the Gen 2 Lightnings since they came out and decided it was time to step into a vehicle that was different, fast, and easy to make faster. I came to NLOC and researched them and found a few to look at in the classifieds. I ended up finding one in Baltimore from a guy who had a reputation for taking care of his vehicle and bought it sight unseen. Now here I am, loving every minute I drive my Lightning. 2. Do you have any interesting stories about previously owned vehicles, before becoming a Lightning owner? My cars have been boring up until now. My first two cars were 1982 Oldsmobile Toronados. They were great cars back in the day, but a little strange. Front wheel drive 305 cubic inch tanks on wheels. No one ever believed that they were front wheel drive back then. After that I had a few Mustangs before moving up to my Lightning. But, I am glad I got my Mustangs, that is where I developed the mod bug. Although, I think my bank account is not as happy as I am. ![]() 3. What modifications have you made to your truck since you have owned it...both show and go? Wow, this is going to be a long answer. I bought the truck used with a ported blower, 5# lower, JDM full silver bullet exhaust, and 2 inch drop shackles. I told myself, “It sure is nice to have a vehicle that I won’t be tempted to modify because it’s as fast as I will ever want.” Oops!!! I then upgraded to a 2.3 KB and number of other bolt-ons and accessories. With that KB set up, I put down 520/603 and ran 11.85 @ 116 mph on 26 inch ET Streets. Now the truck sits with the following mods and puts down 672/753 with no track times yet. Performance: Engine: AVT Performance built long block Fox Lake Stage II heads Comp Stage II cams Turbo System: Fastlane Motorsports turbo kit Precision Turbo T76gts JGS 50mm wastegate GReddy Type RS BOV Pro Turbo Systems intake box AVT Performance custom inlet AEM Tru-Boost electronic boost controller Exhaust: AVT Performance Custom 4 inch down pipe AVT Performance custom Y pipe (4 inch to dual 3inch) Twin bullet mufflers 4 inch polished tips Transmission: Factory Tech TD 2800 stall torque converter Factory Tech transmission cooler Factory Tech valve body Suspension: Hotchkis TVS w/ 2 degree pinion shims Strange adjustable rear shocks 2004 Lightning Bilstein front shocks JLP traction bars Cooling: JLP Intercooler overflow tank (Street Edition) LFP heat exchanger Twin pusher E-Fans DCC fan controller Fuel System: 60# Injectors SFP adjustable fuel pressure regulator Walbro twin 255lph fuel pumps Misc: C&L power plenum Romac balancer pulley AVT Performance hidden oil separators SCT X-Cal II tuner SCT 2800 MAF JLP drive shaft loop Accufab single blade throttle body Appearance: Sylvania Xenarc HID system Clear corner lights 04 Lightning fog lights 04 Lightning front bumper 04 Lightning tail lights 04 Lightning third brake light Anthracite FR500 Mustang wheels with adapters Cervinis Cobra R Hood Custom airbrushing for plenum and shroud by Augies Art Window tint Expedition center console A-pillar 3 gauge pod Alpine CD player JL Audio speakers Carriage Works black upper and lower grills Shorty antenna 4. Do you have any interesting stories about your Lightning? I was going down the interstate the day I picked up my Lightning with the turbo installed and I was feeling good listening to the sound of the turbo and the BOV. I had actually slowed down to well under the speed limit since the interstate was nearly empty so I could feel the acceleration from about 40-80mph when I looked in the rear view mirror and see a black LS1 WS6 Trans Am with skinnies coming up behind me. He pulls up next to me and then tries to jump me and show me his power and he hits the gas. I already had my O/D off just in case he did that and I nailed it. I start pulling him very hard all they way up until I let out of it. The kid pulled up next to me, the look on his face was hysterical and he signaled me to get off at the next exit. We pull off and talk for awhile. He was like what the heck is done to that truck. I told him and it turns out he has a heads/cams/intake WS6 and was just amazed that he got yanked by a truck. I was not on the high boost setting, only 15#, but it sure was fun. What was funny was I had a run in with a red WS6 when I was testing the new boost controller the week before and I stopped and talked to him as well. Looks like I might be meeting more people with this new set up. 5. Tell us about yourself, your hobbies, business or work, sports, family, etc. I am 32 years old and live in Raleigh, NC. I am a police officer in North Carolina and have been for 10 years. I really enjoy what I do and wouldn’t trade my job for any other job. My hobbies include bowling, Texas hold’em, going to NC State Wolfpack sporting events, going to Carolina Hurricanes games, and watching sports on TV. I am a sports fanatic and watch more sports than I probably should. I had a great year for my professional sports teams in 2006. I am a Pittsburgh Steelers, Carolina Hurricanes, and St Louis Cardinals fan and they all won their championships in 2006. 2007 hasn’t been as kind so far. I graduated from NC State University in 1996 and still enjoy going to numerous Wolfpack sporting events. 6. How long have you been a user of the NLOC.net, when did you become an NLOC member, and why did you choose to become a member of NLOC? I joined NLOC in June of 2004 to search for information on these beasts and search the classifieds for one close enough to purchase. I became a paid member immediately after I purchased my Lightning from CobraYankee in August of 2004. We are such a small community because of the limited production runs of the trucks, so I felt compelled to join and pay so that we can maintain such a great forum. 7. What suggestions do you have to make the NLOC.net website easier to use and navigate? I would like to see the Gen 1 and Gen 2 truck sections as the first sections when you go to the forums area so we don’t have to scroll down. Besides that, the website is perfect and the servers are so much better than any other message board that I am a member of. 8. Why did you pick your board user name (screen name)? When I was shopping for my Lightning, I owned a 1999 35th Anniversary Mustang, so the screen name I was using on any message board was 35thPony. I use it on sports boards as well and get the question “What the heck does your name mean?” all the time. It actually works out nicely and gives people a lot of shortened ways to refer to me (35, Pony, 35th). ![]() 9. What are your plans for future changes to your truck? I have a few things planned for next winter to make the most out of the truck. My truck will always be a street driven truck, so there is not too much more I would like to get done (yeah right, I always say that). First, I will be redesigning the inlet tube on the turbo kit to put the MAF and Filter in the fender well. Next will be a built transmission from BTS or Dante, I’m a little scared of hooking up on slicks at the track one day and my transmission not feel good from that. After that, I need to upgrade my fuel lines and fuel rails, get a larger hot side exhaust housing for the turbo, and do a little more head porting work. The quality of head porting has increased so much since my heads were ported almost two years ago. 10. Whom would you like to thank for help\donations\support for putting the truck together? First, I would like to thank Arthur Todd at AVT Performance in Conway, SC for building one great engine and answering all the questions I have had along the way. Arthur is a great individual and his attention to detail is amazing. I learned most everything I know about these trucks from him. Arthur is about doing things exactly right and not trying to rob you in the process. I have so much respect for him that I can’t express it enough in this short article. I would also like to thank Caleb and Melvin Skinner at Fastlane Motorsports in Raleigh, NC for putting together one amazing turbo kit and getting it all to work properly. Caleb treats every car project like it’s his own and will not stop until everything is perfect. They always help out when there are problems on the side of the road or if things don’t go exactly as planned when at the shop. Caleb has been working on turbo Mustangs forever and that experience was very valuable in the last 3 months. I would like to thank Augie from Augies Art. That guy is the most amazing artist I have ever seen. He treats every car like it’s a canvas and always creates a master piece. He is one of the busiest men I have ever met too. If he’s not doing a chopper or a car, he has some small pieces like mine getting done for people all over the country. Lastly I would like to thank all the Junkies at Horsepowerjunkies.com. That is a local website here in NC that is for all car enthusiasts (except ricers... LOL). Those guys keep me motivated to get faster and faster. All the guys and girls there just love their machines and the numerous get togethers allow me to see so many great cars and meet many great people. ![]() Congratulations to Brian and his 2000 silver Ford Lightning for Gen 2 Truck of the Month, May 2007 ! |

| Mopar and Fords!!!!!!!!! | Brian.... Nice L, Thats cool that you uphold the law, and have a truck that can smash all the laws, do you have any stories about your job dealing with....well people that let there cars/trucks do what they were ment to do....go fast? Have you ever pulled over a L, or a Cobra for letting her eat, or street racing?? Then said, Its cool I own a SVT product? (as long they arn't indangering anyone, but themselves) I been stopped a couple times(In my gen1, and in my 10sec duster....I know its brand X, But I've had it since "91 when I was in hi-skool....see i stil kant spele..lol ) And the Law was not in to the hi-perf mind. Any way, its cool to see a guy that is in your line of work, that likes hi-performance power. Don't get me wrong......there is a time, and place, to turn the HP loose on the street, as long as its done in a safe, and controlled manner. Nice L!!!! I would love to see your L, in person...Maybe at WFC, or L-fest, sometime. Kerry

| Instinct > iPhone | Thank you guys a bunch... I tried to making something subtle that stood out while driving it... The checkered flag was going to come off when I bought it cause it looked bad in a photo, but in person it looks really good... But, I was really shocked and surprised when I was selected... thanks to all |
