| Moderator Paid Member | November 2006 Gen 2 TOTM - Congratulations to Dennis "Sixpipes" Glenn (NLOC#582) November 2006 Gen 2 Truck Of The Month - Congratulations to Dennis (Sixpipes) Glenn (NLOC #582) This month the Gen 2 TOTM is the very first model year for the 2nd generation trucks: 1999. A very clean, well detailed, and pretty potent Lightning ! Additionally, Dennis provided his truck to André Wagenknecht from Germany during L Fest 4 allowing André to make his first ever passes on a dragstrip ! The camaraderie in the Lightning community is 2nd to none, as is Dennis and his Lightning ! 1. What sparked your interest in the Ford Lightning? I first became interested in the Ford Lightning when the Gen I came out in 1993. My kids were in junior high school at the time, and I decided that it didn’t fit our budget or family situation so I didn’t buy one. When the Gen II came out in 1999, I couldn’t help myself any longer and took delivery of my black 99 the day my youngest son graduated from high school. So you might say that my 99 Gen II was a “graduation” present. 2. Do you have any interesting stories about previously owned vehicles, before becoming a Lightning owner? I bought a VW dune buggy when I was working in Minnesota in the summer of 1971. It had the fiberglass body and no top. I drove it back to Texas at the end of the summer and on to Tuscaloosa, AL for my junior year at The University of Alabama. Rain or shine, I drove it until returning to Texas in late December after the fall semester was over. A cold front came through on my way home and by the time I arrived at my parent’s house the wind was out of the north at about 30 mph and snow was traveling horizontally. I have never been that cold and wet since and I think it was maybe March before I drove that car again. ![]() 3. What modifications have you made to your truck since you have owned it...both show and go? The first things I did to my truck were cosmetic because there were not a whole lot of aftermarket parts for the SVT Lightning in 1999 so most of the stuff was made for the regular F-150. I added an AAD “cobra" hood, Roush suspension, Snuglid, and Trenz billet grille the first year. I also had all the badges removed and added a carbon fiber dash kit. The 20” Neeper T-Rex wheels I added in 2000. The stereo has been upgraded on a couple of different occasions. The first performance part I bought was an aftermarket air filter kit from Power Surge Performance in 1999. I soon added a blue Superchip and later went to a Danny Swanson tuned chip. I now run an SCT program with a Kenne Bell blower and 4# pulley. I have added electric fans for both the radiator and the intercooler and recently upgraded the stock heat exchanger for an aftermarket unit. The engine and transmission are stock (pretty amazing for 95K miles of abuse), but I have added an Art Carr torque converter as well as an aftermarket valve body to improve the transmission shifting characteristics. 4. Do you have any interesting stories about your Lightning? I started taking my truck to the strip almost immediately when I got it and probably one of the most surprising things to me was how fast the truck was right from the dealer. People that had never actually seen a Lightning back in 1999 were amazed at the performance not only at the strip, but also at autocross events. It didn’t take me long to figure out that acceleration was the strong point of these trucks so I stayed primarily at the drag strip, but I did attend an autocross event in Mineral Wells, TX one time and the track was pretty open since it was laid out on an old airport runway. There was quite an audience when I took the truck out on the track and I was inundated with questions (most of which I didn’t know the answer to at the time) when I got back to the pits. It didn’t take me long to figure out I would go broke buying tires and brake pads if I continued auto crossing so I have let the truck do what it does best, kick butt at the strip. The strip is where I came up with the name "go" rila. 5. Tell us about yourself, your hobbies, business or work, sports, family, etc. God has blessed me with one of the worlds most understanding wives (I’m going to make sure she reads this) and a couple of cool sons. I graduated from the University of North Texas in 1974 with a degree in Biology and a minor in Chemistry. I have been employed by companies that recycle or reuse chemicals and other waste materials and currently work for Energis LLC, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Holcim (US) Cement. I have really enjoyed working on Gen I trucks the last couple of years ‘cause after all, they were my first love. I also like the outdoors and have tried to stay fit by riding bikes (pedal ones), going to the gym, and actually did a couple of short triathlons earlier this year. ![]() 6. How long have you been a user of the NLOC.net and when did you become an NLOC member, and why did you choose to become a member of NLOC? I started using the Internet almost immediately to find information and news about my truck when I bought it in 1999. I first went to the F150online forum because the NLOC was, as you might expect, almost all Gen I trucks. But as things developed, I found the NLOC started providing really good information on the Gen II trucks and to be honest, was a much more pleasant place to visit. Doug Boss and I also started a local Lightning owners club in 2000 and the NLOC made it possible to use their site for local chapter news and events. I have been a member since October of 2000, and give the site credit for helping get our local club (TALON) off the ground here in the Dallas area. ![]() 7. What suggestions do you have to make the NLOC.net website easier to use and navigate? The NLOC has really improved the web site over the past several years and I am really happy with the way it is set up. It’s like anything else, when you get use to it, you usually don’t like things to change that much. ![]() 8. Why did you choose your board user name (screen name)? When I first started visiting forums on the Internet, I was a dedicated motorcyclist. I owned a Honda Valkyrie at the time so I decided on the name “Sixpipes” because my bike had six cylinders and six individual exhaust pipes. The name also had a native-American sound to it and since I am part Cherokee Indian, I thought that was kind of cool. 9. What are your plans for future changes to your truck? I plan to make some distinctive changes in the next couple of years, mostly cosmetic. The changes will include different wheels and new paint and maybe a change that the true Lightning purist guys might not like, but we’ll see how it goes. ![]() 10. Whom would you like to thank for help\donations\support for putting the truck together? Most of the cosmetic changes I have done to the truck were things that I liked and thought would look cool. And for the most part, I am happy with the way things turned out. However, there is only one place I will ever take my truck for mechanical work and that is Performance Research in Duncanville, TX. Terry Cole has been so dedicated to the TALON club and does such great work; I just don’t think I would feel good about letting anyone else mess with Go_rila. ![]() Current best ¼ mile run 12.29 at 110mph recorded at L Fest 4 Congratulations to Dennis Glenn and his 1999 Ford Lightning for Gen 2 Truck of the Month, November 2006 |
