| Guest | Taken from the Out of Towners thread: http://www.svtlightnings.com/go_rila...r/mvc-742w.mpg Sounds like "piston slap" to me. " I know the guy that put that motor together and he is a master mechanic so the motor has got to be bad, right? Interesting visit on Friday to discuss my options regarding repair, replacement, etc..... at the local Ford dealership that installed the timing gear. Not done yet, but will probably take it to another shop to verify that the right bank cams are off a tooth causing the valves to contact the pistons. I expect to find bent valves among other things. So what does it sound like to you guys?Question: The dealership has claimed no responsibility for incorrect assembly because it is a "hybrid motor" (ie 2.5L/3.0L). I owe $800+ (reduced from $1,200+) for the work that was done; almost all labor. For you guys that have had experience with this sort of thing, how would you handle it with the dealership? | Guest | Sixpipes If your second opinion does end up confirming the guesses we made based on the sound and the Scanner then Bankston has a BIG PROBLEM IF they are unable to do the basic things to trouble shoot a customers problem they are going to drop a great deal in the view of many of us. Sounds like they are hiding behind the "hybrid motor" excuse. Rather than try to figure out what is really happening they are using an excuse. Sounds like what corporate computer guys say " Sorry we dont support that Operating system" rather than use the knowledge they have to try to help figure it out they panic and hide behind the excuse. Doug Did you show them the computer codes and play the MPG for them ? |

| Guest | The guys I talked with were the service writer and the team leader. I know they are not in a position to wave the charges. I was looking for options and none that I heard really sounded acceptable. The right thing to do is talk with the service manager about the problem and make him aware of the situation. If I was the service manager, I would want to know if there was a potential problem with work in my shop (if in fact, that is the case). My concern is, I spent $900 on a motor and countless hours on the project and now the heads may be screwed up because of improper installation. |

| Guest | Truley SAD thing is that we are NOT experts but with a little info and a little common sense I bet we have figured out the problem.... We are paying what, $100 an hour, for them to apply all their tools and combined knowledge to fix the issues.... And they are coming across clueless Doug |

| Guest | I would explain to them...Hybrid Motor My ***...this is NOT Formula 1 or something I don't know all of the specifics...but I personally would have left the car at the dealership with all of that noise eminating from under the motorcarriage... ![]() I would then try professionally to have a civilized conversation with the Service Manager...leaving fists in pocket (very hard to do explaining to them their inability to rebuild a simple internal combustion engine...Dennis...did the motor knock when received? Personally it sounds like valve train clatter...and not piston slap. Reminds me of the time I stabbed a distributor out of phase...timing would be my guess. I would also write a letter and make 3 copies. On this letter I would include all 3 addresses. The Better Business Bureau. Bankston Ford and a small claims court attorney.... ![]() I would expect recourse at this point... Last buy not least....let them know that conversation is taking place on the internet....and by the way. Who and where is Mr. Bankston?? Send him a copy first. ![]() [This message has been edited by 5.4 Muscle (edited 01-06-2002).] |

| Guest | Hybrid motor crap sounds like a lousy excuse to me. Also, based on the MPEG I agree with 5.4 that it sounds more like valve train. Don't think I'd pay anything untilit's resolved, and I think it's up to them to resolve the problem at this point. BTW, if you end up writing off the project I know where you can find a really nice Avalon, still under warranty. ![]() |

| Guest | If they messed up the motor in the process of installation, I sure wouldn't pay them anything, and maybe even seek further compensation. While I don't agree that its "just a simple combustion engine", I wouldn't pay people a thousand bucks to experiment around, either. Either they can do it or they can't, and they should have been up front with you. The Service Manager does have a bigger pocket of money to satisfy customers than the Service Advisors do. I believe it is renewed at the beginning of each month, so since it is early...well, lets just say I would talk to him sooner rather than later. ![]() By the way, you werent kidding, it sounds terrible. Maybe they put a diesel in the car instead? |

| Guest | The car is still at the dealer and no money has changed hands at this point. The service manager will have an opportunity to resolve the matter this week hopefully. That is plan A. The alternate plan is to pay Bankston for their work and have the car towed from Bankston directly to another shop where the engine will be opened up and examined. If there is a problem, which I expect, it could get ugly. I am not angry at this point because everybody is entitled to make a mistake (even me) every once in a while. We'll see how things go this week. |
