Post any of you ever drive your trucks in the winter?

Hi,
Just wondering if any of you drive your trucks all the time, regardless of season. It isn't so much the snow that bothers me about driving my truck in winter, since we don't get that much here in the extreme SE corner of the state. It's the salt. Right now I'm going back and forth between getting a set of 17 inch Expedition wheels and tires for the winter, OR getting a little 4 cylinder FWD car. Main problem with the idea of getting a car is that it'll be old, and if it breaks down it's just something else for me to stick money into.

I know it's a pain, but, go with the second driver. I'll never drive my L in the salt pits of Michigan again, if I can help it. Had to go with a daily driver. But I'll get the L out for those sunny snowless days in the winter for a spin. After all, it runs even better then.

Yeah! I would go with a second ride. You will want to keep that salt away from the L. Not worth risking it!

HOORAY!! I got a car to drive in the winter! a '91 Olds Cutlass Calais. Nothing special, but it runs and drives great. Only cost $700. That's less than I would have spent to get wheels and tires for the L. Now the L can sit out the winter safe in my back garage.(I have 2 garages)

I just can't see myself driving a gm even if it is a winter car. I look at it this way, how many days in the winter are really bad? Not many. Last winter was a little different though only in December. I have a Mustang that I drive in the summer. I like the car so much I bought another Mustang to drive in the winter. I needed something new so I bought the Lightning to replace my winter mustang. My winter Mustang still looks nicer than most peoples cars and I have had it 5 years. I guess I'll buy some tires for the L. and see what happens!

You have to understand, I drive 45 minutes, one way, to work. It's all freeway. I leave work at 4 am. Roads aren't plowed at 4 am. I live in a semi-rural area, on a back road. They don't get around to plowing my road, EVER. They salt THE HELL out of I-75 and 275 in the winter. They salt the roads even when there's no need to. So I didn't want to subject the Lightning to that.

That is fine that you want to keep your Lightning rust free. Your Lightning is your summer vehicle. My Mustang is mine. I guess if I decided to build a lightning for summer than I would buy another one so I would by driving a lightning no matter what the weather was.

Funny, I looked at a Mustang, an '88 notchback w/ the 2.3 liter and 5 speed. Nice little car, been repainted, only had a little over 100,000 miles. I had thoughts of driving it in the winter, then tearing it open in the garage in the summer and sticking a nice 302 in it. But some kid bought it while I was thinking it over. I saw it yesterday driving through town, had a nice fresh dent in it. Dont'ya just love teenage drivers?

Good thing for you. Fox Mustangs are absolutely horrendous in the snow. Where you live, you'd never make it to work. Not because of the freeways, but because you'd never make it TO the freeways. Snow tires are a MUST for even partial traction.

I agree, without the snow tires the Mustang was pretty bad in the winter. I bought some glacier grip tires and it drove awesome! I wasn't afraid to drive it anywhere! Never got stuck! We will see if I am as lucky with the L.

I dont know.... I have had about 7 Mustangs (V8's 83 - 99) and have driven at least 1/2 of them in the winter. Never had snow tires either. Now down in the 'burbs we dont get the snow that they get up north, but I never really had to much trouble in the winter. But I still wouldnt call a Mustang a great winter car...
