Post 4V Head Conversion

Jim, I am interested in converting my '01 L over to 4V heads. I talked to you a couple of weeks ago and you mentioned sending some info out...haven't seen anything yet - could you please send it to mrobins@mnsi.net. I am mostly interested in the intake to adapt to the heads and what the options are for the exhaust system. Thanks.

Has anyone done this conversion yet? If so, what kind of 1/4 mile times are you running now?

a lot of people are worried about losing torque with this setup and say to wait for the 3V heads

I talked to Jim about the same thing. It can be done but is big bucks. Since we both live fairly north the 4v heads are a little over kill. If you lived in Florida or Texas where it is real hot the 4V would be a performance advantage, that might be worth the expence.

Instead of 4V heads I am going to get the 2V heads ported and have bigger valves installed. With the remaining money I will get pistons, rods, and his long tube headers.

If you really want to go nuts also get a bigger blower, which should be available later this winter.

But then of course since you only live once and if you can afford it, I say go for it.

With all those mods it would be one sick machine.

3V heads are still another year and a half away (unless you live in Australia) then you'll need (aside from a unique front cover, cam covers and the heads themselves) a new processor and wiring harness to control the variable valve timing. It'll be a long wait to get a 3V conversion to market IMO.

I believe the 4V heads have merit if the right combination of parts are used, keeping in mind the weight of the vehicle and the rod ratio we're playing with. I'm not sure the aftermarket has caught up enough yet (Crane has only 3 cam re-grind options so far I believe) but as long as there is demand there will always be new products.

Canadian Bolt,

We have done this several times.
If you go to TeamJDM.com you will see a couple of articles on the convertions.
You will see our proto type 1997 Lightning.
I will try to get Justin to post a link to it.

Jim, I took a look at the articles on your website - it appears that a Vortech supercharger was used on that truck. Do you make an intake that allows the stock Lightning blower to be used with the 4V heads or is the stock blower not adequate for this conversion? Appreciate the feedback.

My personal belief is that the 4V heads and the stock Eaton blower(with pully or not) are not a very good match. The 4V heads love to rev(4.6 DOHC), but the Eaton blower is already PAST redline with the 4lb pully on it. Sounds like a marginal setup at best to me. The truck would still be limited to a 5500RPM redline from the chip and pully(probably less by the pully, not sure though). And granted the 4V heads might be better, but they still aren't being put to their full advantage.

We're about to find out...was at one of the well-known engine builders yesterday - they are putting the finishing touches on a Lightning motor that has been converted over to the 4V heads, using a (partial) stock intake and the stock blower. We were told it will be featured in an upcoming FF&MM issue this spring. If this package works as well as they claim it will, I predict there will be a lot of interest in the conversion.

Jim, any plans to make headers for a 4V conversion?

DrTriton,

We have already done the 5.4 4V convertions.
They have been featured in MM&FF sport truck
and what use to be super ford magizine.
The exhaust port locations are identical to the 2V.
I would just have to put the 4V exhaust flange on our exsisting headers.
We do this with the 2V and 4V Mustangs all of the time.

Hope this helps
Jim@JDM

P.S.
The 4V convertion will work great.
