Ranger to be the Gen III L????

From the January 2005 issue of Motor Trend:

".......If there's another Lightning, it's more likely to be based on a smaller truck, perhaps the next Ranger, now delayed to 2010 or so."

Before that sentence, they say the reason the Gen III got cancelled or put off until 2008 or so is because the new F-150 is considerably heavier than the last F-150, so SVT would've had to spend a lot of engineering resources just to make up for the weight gain.

How about that new Sport Trac they will show in Jan. in Detroit? It has a 4.6 in it, finally. Drop the Cobra engine in it and the light weight and BAM! The little sleeper. How about Thunder. HAHA.

Not sure where MT is getting there info but I highly doubt Ford would uses a ranger platform for the basis of a New Lightning. The Lightning that we know and love is and always has been a full size truck and not a compact pickup. Thats part of the appeal.

Yes just what I was thinking. If Ford wants to call something a Lightning it has to be based on the F-150.

But don't forget these big companies are also driven by marketing. Ford has shown that they will drop a S/C in the ranger, just concept though. I wouldn't be suprised to see a Ranger Lightning, I would even consider it. My current ranger wuold be due for replacemtn about then, and I project my '01 Lightning would have about 16,000 on its odometer. Be kind of neat to have to brother Lightnings, big and little.

Ford used to splash "Ranger" all over there full size truck in the '70s before the compact Ranger truck appeared. so these trim names mean little to them.

At over 4,300 lbs., the current Sport Trac is lighter than the Gen2 L, but it's still heavy. Unless the new ST is lighter, the Cobra's 4.6 probably won't be enough to make it "Lightning" quick.

The Ranger would be a good platform on which to base a sport truck, but I would never be able to bring myself to think of it as a Lightning.

I think Ford should build a high performance Ranger to kick the Dakota RT's A** and call it the Lightning Bug.
But I don't see a Ranger taking place of the F150 Lightning. That would be a major screw up on Ford's behalf in my opinion.

For has very good intentions. Afterall, they look at the heritage of big players in the USA like Harley Davidson; so they make a Harley Davidson edition, SVT editions, King Ranch and they make a edition, Eddie Bauer the famous clothing designer and they make a edition, and I applaud them for that, those packages better Ford and complement the driver.

Were I have mt beef is the Ranger. How many can you make?, theres the FX-4, FX-4 level 2. what happened to level 1 was it a screw up?, theres the ranger sport, and who knows what others I haven' t mentioned. Don't get me wrong they are very nice and sporty looking trucks and I like them.

I just like my Lightnings and King Ranches and that is probily all I ever will own.

a lightning based on a ranger wouldn't be totally out of the question. The svt website has a concept they built of a ranger with a 5.4L lightning engine so they muct have put some thought into it

Isn't the Ford "Thunderbolt" the Ranger version of a Lightning even though its not an SVT product?

IF I'm not mistaken, this was a tuner that made this truck, like a Saleen. I can't recall the name of the company....they use to do alot on the Firebird--the FIREHAWK.......ah, SLP. I believe this is theirs.

Taking a page from GM's book with the GTO, here's what the next Lightning should be:

"F6 Tornado": turbo 6cyl, 362HP, 405lbs/ft torque, 5spd, and I saw an Aussie tuner site that got 1000HP out of the Zetec 6cyl...

www.fpv.com.au

The 5.4l "Pursuit" model is no slouch either... 380+HP without forced induction....yes, please.

I'd rather see an F6-based Gen3L than a Ranger-based L. There would definately be NO L-clones running around...

Besides, beauty is in the yadayadayada....
