Question Fuel Milage (I know Iknow).

Ok I know that if you are asking about fuel milage you should not own a Lightning. But I need to know. I have had two f150's one with a 4.6 and one with 5.4. When I changed to the 5.4 from the 4.6 I new the milage would change but not as drastic as I found out. I still own the 5.4 but would like trade it in for the lightning. The Lightning will be used as a toy and some times as a daily driver(weather permiting of course) I will also pull a small flat bed with my Mustang on it. Total towing weight 5000 lbs. Fuel towing I don't care about but empty I do. Can anyone help me out.

mustanggt1,

I have never checked my fuel milage, however, I did see one owner that documented milage for ever tank of fuel. It was a LONG time ago, but I'll do a quick search for it.

Welcome to the board!

Cool

I was unable to find the thread I mention above. This thread does have some disscussion about milage.

mustanggt 1: I keep mpg records on my 01 l religiously. With a 3lb pulley, throttle body, oil breather cap, stock plugs, JL ramair filter, synthetic oil(5W20), and a JL street chip, I averaged 14+ mpg. I travel to and from work on an interstate and drive to lunch each work day as well, so it sees a mixture of city & h'wy miles.

With a PSP flip(street performance & economy) chip, I got 15+ mpg under the same conditions. IMO, the economy flip-chip is worth it if you drive alot. I have made some mod. changes recently and have not gotten enough miles since then to know what I'm getting right now, but maybe this will help.

Thanks Lighninrod, much thanks. Will keep your info in my file for future referance. Best of all the milage is not to bad compared to my stock 5.4 Lariat. I think the best I ever got on a long hiway drive was 17 to 18 mph. With a very Light foot that is. Mustanggt1

Last fill up on my 01 L w/ 3300 miles a little over 14 mpg, completely stock. That is mostly 50-60 mph stop and go driving to and from work with the ocassional full throttle blast to 70 -80 mph. Mileage was a little better with the chip, air filter and 2# lower pulley, always in the 15 mpg range. On a recent trip I averaged 17 mpg and that was at 75 - 80 mph (70mph average) so not to bad and almost exactly what my 97 F150 S/C (thats super cab, not super charged ) Lariat would get with a 4.6 on board.

I keep track of my mileage pretty well and I drove my truck normally ( as hard as that is to do) for about 2 months and during that time I got about 13.7mpg. I have taked two long trips with it and we ran 65-70 on those and I got 16-17mpg. But, for the most part if you are driving it like most Lightning owners do you will average about 10-12. But, like anyone of us would say, its not about the mileage... Oh and by the way, I pulled a bumper trailer the other day with a Ford Diesel Excursion frame and running gear the other day and I got 9.5 on that trip.

Uh.... I don't know if this has anything to do with my rough idle... but my mileage is no where close to everyone elses'. I do mostly hwy miles at about 50-70 mph, with a little stop and go and some WOT romping on the weekends. When my 2001 L was new I was getting between 13 and 14 MPG. It's a lot colder now, but I'm wondering if my engine missing/idle proglem is the reason I have been getting only 10.5 MPG with the same driving habits/patterns. I have no mods too, BTW.

BMWBig6: In your other thread you said the #5 injector "blew". What did you mean "blew"? I think you still have an injector problem--especially, now that you mentioned your low mpg.

Hi LIGHTNINROD, well I used the word "blew" but I meant "failed." Basically the #6 injector never stopped "blowing" and would drip into the cylinder when the car was off (would not maintain pressure). They said they replaced both the #6 injector and the #6 plug (which was obviously fouled). I guess the coil pack on that cylinder is not affected since it sits outside. I kind of agree with you - my fuel delivery still seems sketchy. I know the L runs rich, but my pipes are black and 10.5 mpg is ridiculous.

My '00 L has gotten 18mpg on long sustained hwy trips at a constant 73mph, no WOT blasts , but I had about 350 lbs in the bed. THATS THE BEST I'VE EVER GOTTEN. Usually 17mpg on long trips, 10-12 around town.

Thanks everyone! The information is very helpfull. It does seem that if you drive like a human you will get the same mileage towing or just driving as my Lariat 5.4. But if you STAND ON IT who cares about milage its a SVT Lighting.
