Lightbulb JDM's 01 Blown Engine, Why???

I saw the pic's of JDM's blown engine on SVT and it was bad. Good news is, he should have it ready for E-town by this weekend...When the tuners push their engines as much as they do, I guess something is bound to break sooner or later....Did anyone find out why it happened?? Reason that the rod(s) failed???
I know there are a lot of people wondering whether their rods are going to have a failure or not.

Please don't turn this thread into a tuner war. I am just asking questions..

thanks,
DL

Talking

Magnafluxing and xraying the rods and rod bolts might tell something and then again might not. Jim stated on his board that he was putting exactly the same mods on the new engine that were on the old one so he could also tell better what was going on. If the new one throws a rod, maybe we know something, maybe not.

parts wont last when they are always put in a racing situation(i.e. tuning). the harder you push it the shorter their life.

You answered your own question DL. Its called mechanical failure.
I have a Camry at work that threw a rod out the front of the block, and for no apparant reason. The peices arent blue, they didnt get hot, and they didnt dry out from lack of oil, it just let go. Yes, it does have 116,000 miles on it, but I have seen these motors last 250+. It didnt give any warning, the engine just stalled and when they started it back up, it blew.

Hope this helps. JJ

My guess would be BOOST. Jim is running a lot of boost as are a few of us. Factory parts and over boost would be a good guess. His is not the 1st to let go, there are three others in the same boat.

Exactly how much boost? What does his boost guage go up to? It would be nice to know every time someone has a problem with too much boost, just so we all have an idea of a danger zone.

When you begin to reach the 15+ boost pressure, be warned, and if you are spraying nitrous anything above 13 psi is a dangerous step.

I'm with 1badtk, it was probably the 17-18psi of boost he was putting out. With a custom 10" bottom pulley and one so small on the top that the snout had to be machined down, it was just a matter of time before those weak rods gave way.

amazing isn't it? the faster you go,the more you blow!! many years ago, when we blew our circle track engines, we were lucky to save the intake manifold. stuff happens.

Also dont forget that detonation may have been occuring too. Even a little at high RPM with high cylinder pressures can do a lot of damage.

I think Jim made mention of reaching a limit of the stock EEC 5 processor. I'd guess maybe it can't handle things beyond certain boost levels, fuel curves, etc.
Since he mentioned it shuddered on the previous run near the traps, it's possible it leaned way out and detonated itself to oblivion. With those pics, I don't think any amount of (microscopic) looking at the #5 rod would tell much as there is so many pieces left.

Thumbs up

Thanks Everyone for the great info,

This is the kind of info we all are asking ourselves questions about.. I've heard that our engines will take up to 20# of boost, maybe more. Someone said that maybe the rpms were to high and that's what may have caused the engine to blow... I guess we'll wait and see what happens with JDM's new(Crate) motor or the other tuner's motors...I hate to see anyone blow and engine, they aren't giving them away cheap..

DL
