| Guest | i just read on svtlightnings.com that brian k installed an electric fan on his intercooler, did this increase any hp by keepin the intercooler colder at all?? if not other than the reasons posted on his page.. what are the pros and cons?? |

| Guest | Hahaha, well i think i can hyandle this one. In short yes, he could creat more hp due to having colder, and therefore, denser air. Cooler air has a higher density. One guy runs his intercooler through a large resevoir in the bed i read. He is suggesting icing it for races. The same premise, different approach. An electric cooling fan forget the intercooler, now there's a few extra ponies! ------------------ 2000 Silver Lightning. | Guest | First off, I'm pretty new to this board, so I hope what I'm about to say doesn't sound degrading or like a virtual slap in the face, because its not intended to be at all. That said (and the fact that I haven't checked out that site in a while), are you sure that the electric fan they're talking about was for the intercooler and not the radiator? The reason I say is because I'm pretty sure that now both JDM and PSP offer an electric fan to replace the big, bulky stock fan setup that is attached to the end of the (crank?)shaft sticking out the front of the motor. Although this does offer more cooling capacity/ flexibility, since you can turn it on or off at will, and even choose what fan speed you want I believe, I don't think thats the main reason people choose this mod. From what I understand, the major benefit is the fact that the engine itself doesn't have to turn the large fan (less mass), which results in less inertia for the engine to overcome when you mash the gas; hence, the engine can rev faster. Also, I think the "reservoir" you're talking about is most likely the JohnnyLightning (JL) Powercooler, or the homemade version someone made with a blue cooler and copper tubing. The original JL Powercooler sat in place of where your battery is under the hood, and has the capacity to hold something like 2-3 bags of ice / gallons of really really cold water. The major benefit of this IS cooling; on the order of 90 degrees or more I believe to the intercooler fluid (antifreeze). I forget the actual power gains he saw on the dyno, but it was tons and tons of torque and some serious horsepower (I'd think more than a chip or pulley offers separately). I remember a few weeks ago, JL said that he was in the process of putting the finishing touches on a bed-mounted Powercooler, that would not require relocating the battery like the current model does (which is what I'm waiting for). Hope this helps. Later... GK |
