Question Whats up with our Lightning?

Well I have had the White Lightning for about going on 2 months it just rolled over 3K on miliage. I bought the truck for my Girlfriend so she could come out and race with us. The best the truck has mustered in the 1/4 is 14.25. it usually runs 14.5's to 14.7's I know its a 01 but everyone else I talk to has ran 13.8's or faster stock. I take the airfilter out and have disconnected the boost dump valve I checked the actuater and readjusted it and to no change. I was wondering is there anymore tricks? I took it in at the dealership I work at and our lead Drivability guy said its good to go. Its kinda bad my Diesel kills this thing in the 1/4 it usually gets a 2.1 to 2.3 short times on stock f-1 tires. we leave the line at 1500RPM it spins but its expected being on stock rubber. I wanna know if I got a dud or what. I am getting ready to chip,Homemade ram air filter, powercooler, single blade throttle body, and flowmasters, and maybe a set of ET streets. and another question will 15 in. wheels fit on the rear I know the brakes are huge on this thing I want a set of ET's or full on slicks. Gimmie some Idea's Also looking for some of those BA Bolt exhaust tips. Any Help is greatly apperciated.

Greg

Try launching at about 1,100 rpm and rolling onto the throttle. Maybe just 'squeak' the tires off the line. Turn off the overdrive, but leave the gear selector in 'drive'. You should be able to pull 1.9x 60's on the F1's.
Also, cool weather will make a big difference too! Maybe 1/2 second!

What was your MPH anyway?

Definately lower your launch rpm to 1000. That should get you at least another .1. Whos drivin it during the week? Sounds like its probably still pretty tight. Tell you girlfriend to wot that baby from 0-100 four or five times a day. "Drive it like you stole it." They don't achieve their best until about 7k miles when driven hard. Driven easy it takes even longer. Dogged vehicles turn out to be dogged vehicles.

My '01 stock was running about 9.1 to 9.3 1/8th which is pretty much a 14.2 to 14.5. I would say you will get the most gains from a chip, pullies, tranny valve mod., and filter/modified air box(if it is real hot). I don't believe the throttle body helped and the exhaust is just for sound in my book.
Then get some M/T et streets or drag slicks depending on what you use the truck for. I have M/T et streets 26x11.5x16. I think others get better times on 28x11.5x15's. But then you have to grind the rear calipers. This is what I would do if I had to do it over.
I've only been at this a short time, 5 months, but I have read a lot on this website and others to come to these opinions.

The MPH is 94 to 95 we do race with the O/d off. We have tried launching it everyway you can think. Neil who is a member of the MKLO has drove the truck and launched it he said it feels ok. His 01 Silver Lightning is the baddest! I have seen 12.90's out of his truck so I consider him knowledgeable. I have been noticing the boost gauge when the truck shifts drops clear over to the vacuum side of the gauge this is probably normal but hey I dunno if it is. I know and understand the Turbo Diesels and going to a gas motor I am kinda lost. So I consider you all my peers and any help is appreciated.

Cool

My 01 was about like yours until I installed a K&N replacement filter. I sure felt the difference, in the seat of the pants difference. I have never been to the strip, but I can say the boost gage sure is a lot more active since I installed the K&N.

Sounds like your 60' times are killing you. When I am able to pull a 1.9x 60 I run 13.1, when I do a 2.xx I run more like 13.4-13.6. Factor that in and your truck sounds about right.

Well I played a little more with the boost actuater adjustment I am putting out now at wide open in 3rd gear 9.5 LBS of boost with the stock paper filter in the air box does this sound good? I know I wont pick up alot of HP with the throttle body. Does anyone know where and the price to get a off road cat elimination pipe that has a x-pipe piece in it that I can still use the stock exhaust manifolds. I dont think I will gain alot by putting headers on but eliminating the cats is a way of picking up some power. I am just trying to learn as much as I can. Thanks to everyone who has replied to this post. Oh how much do you gotta grind on the rear calipers? I guess I should by my wheels and go from there and with the 26X11.5X16 tire what width wheel should I use 8IN. or 10IN. and what back space?

There's 3 tenths in your 60 ft time. I think you're just up I44 from me a few hours. That 14.25 doesn't sound that bad for the way the weather has been lately. Last week the best I could do was 14.1@96 on a 2.06 60 ft and the other run was a 14.36@95 on a 2.13. I've gone 13.77@99 before, but it was much cooler. I wouldn't worry too much about the times unless it still runs the same this fall after it cools off. It was also kinda stormy last weekend so the barometric pressure was probably fairly low. I can't wait till November when it's 40 degrees, the BP is 31, and the track hooks. Hopefully that will get me to the 13.40's stock.

You have to decide first what tires you want to use. I think a bigger tire will give you a higher mph in the 1/4 mile. 26" is as big as you get for the 16 inch wheels. The 26x11.5x16 tires will fit on the 16x10 and 16x8 wheels. If you want bigger tires you have to go with 15" wheels and shave the calipers. Bolt pattern is 5x135mm. It seems most don't use tubes.
I think JL has some of the quickest times for non nitrous Lightnings. I think he uses 16x11.5x16 tires and a set of 16x10 wheels. You may want to give him a call. I'm not sure who sells the 15" wheels and spacers you will need if you go that route.

At the very least get a chip and filter for it. Leave the exhaust alone unless you wanna put on a louder muffler(or straights). Don't remove the cats, you'll lose torque on the low end. Improve those 60's. You shouldn't spin off the line. Torque it to 1000-1100 like whats been said and rroollll into the throttle.

Mike Phillips mphillips@mediaone.net for the tips. He also has a billet TB that is very nice. I haven't dynoed it yet but others have reported from 5-12 rwhp.

As far as the cats go; you can take them off but you will have to do something with the O2 sensors like defeat thenm with your chip's program.

I'm not aware of any "test pipes" or off-road pipes but I do know of a great place that can help you out.

Rose's out in Grandview (816)761-6033. Greg put on my long tubes, high flow cats, dynomax race magnums, custom H-pipe and lengthend the O2 wires. I provided the long tubes and high-flow cats and BABolt tips, he provided the rest. His labor and parts were $600! The work was perfect; he is a hot ****** himself. Best money I've spent to date.

Go by sometime and talk to him a little, messing with exhausts can be a federal offense. That's why I kept my emmissions equipment functional.

I talked to JL about the tire/wheel issue. He said to get the 26x11.5x16" ET Street tire and 16x10" American Racing Baja wheel. I did and they fit with no grinding required--only the 15" wheels require caliper grinding(d/k how much is required). I'm still learning how to launch my 'beast'--got my first sub 2 sec. 60'(1.972) pass Fri. I never ran mine 'stock' so I can't help with your first question.

Dan
Just remembered something--I removed the spare, jack, and hitch---close to 100 lbs--every bit helps.

The check engine does not come on in the Lightning when the 2 largest cats are removed, but again, you will lose low end torque.
