The stock head unit does not have pre-amps. I hooked up my system to the stock head unit, using line level or high level converters. Any stereo shop should have them, or be able to get them. I think they are $20 each.

Same here, used converters and replaced everything else but the head. It's wearin' on me though, lol. Premium sound my A-s, Sanyo head, plzzzzz. I saw a Cobra with a much better stock system, "Mach" maybe. Ticks me off it wasn't even offered. I mean the SC is music to your ears, but i like a little variety. All JL, All the time. Amps, 300/4 & 250/1, XR 3way front, vr silk dome rear, 10W3 sub. Now it sounds as good as it runs!

Haha...Even the "Mach" is laughable. It's a pretty sorry excuse for "premium sound". Ford just dropped the ball...period.

My wife (who couldn't give a rat's ***** about stereo sound), even made a comment about how pathetic the Mach system was in my Cobra (before upgrading it). But THEN she heard the L's stereo during the Test drive....she asked the salesman if all of the speakers were hooked up!! (You know it sucks when women are critical of it). Naturally the salesman tried to disarm the comment by directing our attention to the "Awesome rumble" of the exhaust....again she just laughed and said, "If this exhaust 'Rumbles', then the SS's must 'EXPLODE'!!" (hahaha....I guess I'm rubbing off on her a little to much!)

Of course I wasn't buying the Truck because of the Stereo (Lucky for Ford)...so I can deal w/ it, until I find a suitable upgrade.

I don't know what you're talking about. The Mach Audio system in my Moutaineer was outstanding! So were the JBL systems in my Mark 8s. All TEN times better than the stock crap in this L.

Apparently I have unusually high standards in a "premium sound system", because my Mach was "Lacking" to put it mildly. The Bose system in my 300zx (owned prior to the Cobra) made the Mach sound like a "AM radio", at the risk of starting a flame war (not my intention AT ALL)...the Monsoon system in my SS makes BOTH of those sound like my grandma's old windup record player! There is absolutely ZERO comparison between them....and the Monsoon even has speed controlled volume (unlike the Mach).

Please don't take any of this as a flame, because it's not meant as one....Perhaps we just have different tastes in music, and therefore require different demands. No biggy...glad you like the Mach...at least we both agree that the L's stereo is just a waste of good copper wire.
