AFR Heads being sent back Stay tuned !

I am really bummed out now.. I was all set to head down to the Mine Shaft {CECIL MD} and rip off a killer pass on the NEW SSTOCK tune but now that's not happening. Well after blowing my cheap graphite gaskets, I took the heads to my machinist to check them for straightness. He stuck the head in a automotive dishwasher and planed on milling the head to make it true and take off as least as possible. I get a call today telling me that the Valve guide clearance is like real excessive. He said it is like they reamed out the guide for another valve stem. AFR says it should read .3435 - .3438 ID He is coming up with .370 They are so sloppy that you could put the valve in and wiggle the face on the seat alot. He can't believe my truck ran this good. A leak down test would show this condition!! The stock AFR valve stem is .342. I called AFR and JASON gave me a RMA #. At first they said that it could be wear due to valve train geometry. I said that I have less than 1500 miles on these heads and run Mobil 1 oil. I told him what cam I have and the Steeda RR . I explained that I didn't hear any noises. It might be a material issue or assembly problem. Either way they want the heads to inspect and come up with a conclusion. If it is their problem the cost of repair and shipping is on them!!! I will keep you guys posted... PS: who wants a Cecil ticket for $40.00

If your running 1.7 rockers manufacturers frown on it, due to the geometry is set using 1.6's. Weird I know, just what I've been told.

It seems every valve guide is BAD. I went there today to the machine shop to see it for my self. Even a 10 year old could see something was wrong, He had all the INTAKE valves out all were super SLOPPY and about 4 were REAL bad , I mean I can't believe the valve even seated properly. 3 valve guide seals were off the guide and were just going up and down with the valve. We pulled a couple Exhaust and they were loose too. Try to imagine .028 clearance, that's a spark plug gap. I was told that I was lucky I didn't drop a head from a valve. I thought the plugs looked a bit funny, I stated Tan center electrode with a dark brown casing.. I thought it was rich but that was oil burning. I had added some oil but with the valve cover leak it was hard to tell where I was loosing it. AFR told me then needed the head to determine if the supplier of the Guides screwed up. They are not OBLONG which would relate to improper valve train geomertry. did the steeda's 1.72RR
do this, I think not. I just wish someone could have seen these, it was unbelievable. I hope AFR does the right thing here. Thats what you get for taking heads right out of the BOX and bolting them on your motor. Carman wanted to pop some valves out and inspect or chamfer anything that need attention!! but I just couldn't wait and put them on. Who knows maybe there are more heads like mine floating around

Dennis, If they came from the factory that way, I doubt you ever had proper valve sealing. If they used a fixed size pilot to grind the seats they should have caught it then. I'll be checking mine while they are on the bench. I hope they step up to the plate and fix or preferrably replace them for you. Bill

Wow Dennis, that really sucks!!! Damn good thing you didn't drop a valve, or valves!!! I'd be SO pissed... yet another reason for caution and patience.
If there are others like yours floating around, your discovery will no doubt save someone alot of trouble and expense if they are about to bolt on a set. There will likely be others who'll be wondering if they should pull theirs and have them checked. It would suck to R&R a pair of heads for no reason, but not as much as it would to have a catastrophic failure. Good luck Dennis, I hope they stand behind their product, lots of us will be watching to see how they handle this, (Shawn, have you checked yours???). Hope you're back together soon and as a bonus get that 10 second time slip!!!

Mike

You were passing enough oil to lube a freight train....you had to be.

So I guess thats also what caused the detonation that took out your gasket, its a good thing you had those cork gaskets or whatever they were in there.

Sorry to hear they went bad. I hope yours is an isolated case. That's strange that they are round. I had an old set that wore oblong, but that was with a stock rocker. I hope mine are OK. My engine builder says he checks everything he installs. I paid for blueprinting, so I hope he checked them. He will blueprint a $3800 set of rods, as he calls them a diamond in the rough.

It just don't add up, why didn't I see smoke or something, unless the cylinder pressure help burn off the excess oil!!!. I guess blowing these gaskets are a blessing . If you saw the look on the machinest face he just couldn't believe it. And to think I had my best 1/8 mile pass right before blowing these graphite gaskets.. Oh well we will see how this pans out!!!
