Cam & Mass Air help!!!!!please

I need a little help. I am thinking of upgrading to Crane roller rockers, same as the 93 Cobras, and a 5.0L speed density cam. I have heard good results from this set up but I recently heard different from a buddy of mine saying that the Lightning cam is better. Also, he is advising I need to upgrade to Mass Air system for any mods such as heads, cam or a S/C such as a Kenne Bell. I know I would eventually need a Mass Air system but they are hard to find and very pricey and would like to start upgrading. I know alot of guys here have some modded Gen 1's and I would really need some advice and help on this set up.....please!!!!

Frustrated!

read some back posts...speed density keeps right up with mass air. if your not looking for a 9 second street demon I wouldnt worry about mass air.

You are going to need a tweecer, and LM-1 unit for tuning. as for mass air, use the money some where else, heads or stall convertor

thats just my 2 cents

as for super chargers, read up allot. there are allot of "post wars" about kennebell vs certrifical superchargers. and now the wars on here are superchargers vs turbos

just read some back posts and see what you want your truck to do then you can figure out what you need

Hey Danny,

Where can a tweecer and LM-1 unit be bought and how is it used. Sorry for my inexperience but I am really a mustang guy and my Gen 1 has always been used for towing my boat or stang. It has only been recent that I have started modding my Gen 1. It has been virtually stock since I drove it off the showroom floor 12yrs ago. Thanks for the help. Arod

www.tweecer.com

these guys say the base model is good enough.

the LM-1 you can get almost anywhere, Summitracing has them. you gotta get a LM-1 with RPM convertor

the tweecer plugs into your trucks computer, and with a laptop you can change the settings on the trucks computer.

I have no experience with the tweecer, its just sitting in a box in my room. but the guys on here love it.

Steve Stock (sstock) is the master of speed density. he'll be breaking tens this season for sure!

I am not a pro, but I have learned sooo much from these guys. You just gotta ask questions and learn from other people. allot of back reading

take care and good luck
Danny

Stop listening to this buddy expert and start listening to us.

A 5.0 HO cam (roller, not flat tappet) is a great upgrade for a near-stock truck.

There are a lot of heads/cam, supercharger, nitrous, etc etc etc trucks out there with the stock computer. About the only thing you've REALLY got to keep an eye on is the cam.

What Jeff said... and has your buddy SEEN the specs on the stock cam??? Of all the pieces Ford put into our motors it is the poorest example, in my opinion responsible for making our trucks fall WAY short of the performance mark they should have easily hit.
I know... for the truck performance climate at the time, blah blah blah... Bottom line for me, 15. slow in the 1/4 is not impressive and the duration and lift #'s of our stock cam aren't even up to the performance standards of a Mustang LX of the same year.
For a truck that stickered @ over $23,000... 12 years ago...
that was just stupid. Tell your buddy I'll sell him my stock cam and lifters when I build my new motor if he thinks it's so great, I'll make him a helluva deal!!!

Your buddy is completely WRONG! The 5.0 HO cam is way better than the stock cam and you can find them real cheap. Plus it works great with your stock SD. You can also get a custom grind if you have the money. Matt form Performance Solutions helped me out with a custom grind cam.

I wish I had a dollar for every time I was told that I needed Mass Air! My stock SD truck has TW heads, Comp cam, PI converter, 30lb injectors and a Novi 2000 SC. It runs great with no problems at all.

The trick is picking a SD friendly cam. Surprisingly, a small SD cam will work way better if you plan on forced induction. Turbos and blowers like small duration and 114-115 deg lobe separation. Which is perfect for SD.

Listen to the guys here before you spend a pile of money on parts that you do not need,

Josh,

I know I have thought about going mass air a few times. However, every time I had enough money to buy it, I wound up spending it on dumb things like Novi blower, aluminum heads, custom cam, drag tires etc...... Now I am stuck with this really fast truck.

I bet the next time I save up some money I will probably just waste it on a better exhaust or a upper and lower intake. I am sure I will wind up going even faster and still not have mass air! One of these days I might try being cool.

Yeah, me too Mike! Blowing a couple plus grand on that Novi was the single most waste of money I ever spent. Hmmm, should of spent it on a mass/air setup and kept the powerdyne, that would of sent me right past the 11's and into the 10's.

Hey, now i thought the DelValLO had the only comedian's on the NLOC.

I knew i had read that first post somewhere he posted this over on SVTP. Arods93snake glad to see you made it over to the NLOC. Well you will now hear what i had told you over on SVTP about the 5.0 cam. Well also same thing i told you about mass air you will get mixed revue's.

Arods93snake, Do you have a goal for the truck as in what you would like it to run and what it's main purpose will be. Let us know more on what you would like and where you wanna go and we will be able to help you alot more.

Bobby

Hey Bobby,

Thanks for the directions on getting my answers. My main project is my 93 Snake but I also want to mod my Gen 1 for the occasional runs to Moroso and to have a little more ump in her. I would like to get a set of nice AFR or TFS heads, Cobra RR, HO cam, 24lbs injectors and eventually possibly a Kenne Bell. I have done a few things already but have'nt gotten into the motor hence the Mass air dilemma. What I have so far is a full Bassani exhaust sys. (Headers to side exit), MSD Billet distro, MSD 6AL, 9mm FRPP plug wires w/NGK platinum's, Pulleys, 130amp PA alternator and waiting to install a Flexalite 295 efan and hi-flow WP that I just purchased. The tranny has a B&M shift kit w/a deep pan and it sits nicely on a Eibach sus. and Bilstiens on the corners. I would love to go all out like some of the guys here but like I said earlier, I try to split the diff with my 93 Cobra and doing both is costly. Sorry about the rant. What I am really looking for is a good solid 325 to 350 horses out back before I go with the Kenne Bell. Does anyone know a good Gen 1 Lightning guru in So. Fla.? Thanks for the info guys!

Alex
