Question boost reference regulator?

hey guys,

ive heard many times of a 'boost referenced regulator". what does this consist of...

a) special regulator
or
b) simply pulling vacuum (for the regulator you have) from a different location?

FWIW i have a Paxton adjustable on there now.
also, does boost referencing relieve any other problems, or what does it do for ya?

Most aftermarket FPR will boost the fuel presure up 1 psi for 1# of boost

Question

Raymond,

Can you describe how it works and better yet, the pros and cons of it?

Thanks,

I dunno........

Just thought it looked cool

Seriously though, that unit is just a more "refined" way of getting extra fuel to the engine in response to boost. I haven't used one yet, but I like being able to adjust both the rate of gain (like recal'ing a regular FMU) and I really like being able to adjust the onset of gain. That should give you a very smooth A/F ratio from no boost to boost.

As a note:
I was trudging through the Lightning code some more last night and I think I might have found a way to further richen up the A/F at WOT with the computer. But I'm not sure that totally eliminating the FMU or something like it is possible.

So would this get rid of the FPR on the fuel rail or just merely replace only the existing FMU?

That one replaces an FMU.

Keep in mind too that it's not a necessity to replace the FMU, I just happen to think that when you need to have a mechanical device to raise pressure (meaning that you can't get the A/F right through the PCM or you have no electronic tuning aid) there are better alternatives. FMU's have been around a while, they're cheap and they do get the job done. If your FMU keeps you in a good A/F then WOT power might not be improved by this gizmo.

BUT people have asked for a better alternative or more adjustability I've pointed out the Cartech setup. To me that thing means no more disc kits, no spikes when boost comes on and generally a better tune up since it's very adjustable. Although some people might find all that extra adjustability a PITA

Muddie - On the Kenne Bell you can boost-reference your stock regulator by connecting it to the outlet side of the blower. This makes the regulator increase 1 psi fuel pressure to 1 psi boost pressure.

The reason for doing this is that the injector is having to fire against the boost pressure and a 1:1 increase keeps it basically at its calibration setting.

An FMU is also a "boost-referenced" regulator with an amplified rate of gain.
