Post Polishing Wheels

Can you use Aircraft Remover on the wheels to take the paint off? Should I have them bead blasted? Do I need a buffer or can it be done by hand. I plan on starting with some 500grit sand paper and working all the way up to 1500-2000 grit, then polishing them and then having them clearcoated. Any tips??

I was going to do this but you can't clear coat them after you polish them. There is nothing for the paint to stick to. My sister's boyfriend is a body man and has already tried this. No good. You will have to keep on them weekly so they stay shinny!

You can polish them and then have them powder coated clear and never have to polish again

I'm not sure what Aircraft Remover is, but if it is not really strong it might not get the job done. I had my wheels repainted when I bought my truck and the place that did it had a hard time getting the old paint off. They said there was some kind of "hard rubber-like coating" that was not coming off easily. They had to dip them several times to get it all off.
Basically it took them twice as long to refinish the wheels as they thought it would. Just a heads up.
BTW-- If you like the polished look, why don't you just get the chrome dipped? Sure it will cost more, but the finish will last and it won't be nearly as much work.

The best way to strip your wheels, is to have them done by a professional. I had mine stripped a few years back and this guy did a great job!

They use a "Plastic" media that dosen't harm the surface of the wheel. It cost me $15 for each wheel,......Deffinitely worth it,in my opinion!

The name of the company is,........

Strip Master
2268 Danforth Drive
Lexington , Ky 40511
859-255-3500

Guys name is Kenny Hamby

Wheel stripping is 95% of their business! They know their ****,.....Trust me!!

The guy that painted my truck had them bead blast a whole car for him once! They did a killer job!

You might try to locate a wheel repair & refurb house locally. They probably could do it for you...

I allready asked the local body shop, he told me I'd have to have um stripped some were else. He told me the same thing about the clear coating. I thought about having them dipped but wont that flake off of aluminum?

Cool

hey man,

i started this project awhile back, and frankly have lost a bit of the gumption to finish it. perhaps the blower install has something to do with that?

yes, aircraft stripper works fine, matter of fact, i dont know what else would do it. personally, im gonna take the other three in and have em media blasted...MUCH easier. after all that sanding, you just start thinking of what you can do to make it a bit easier in the long run.

on the positive side, i am VERY happy with the result. i started with 80 grit, then used a 220 with something in between but cant remember exactly, without going to the shop and looking. on to a 400, and am starting to see results i wanted. then 600, 800, and 1000.

keep at it, youll like the result. theres a pic in the Parts forum of a guys that are polished, and thats about what your going for

I did it the lazy way and sent them of to daves custom wheels and had them chrome dipped for $650.00. That included the shipping. The harded part was waiting for two weeks to get them.
