Post switch to 3.73s, what do you guys think?

Trucks lowered 3"front 4"rear. The biggest tires I could get on the back would be 50 series. I've been to the track with 5psi on the supercharger and could not sqeeze a whole 1/4 pass out of 3rd gear on 40series tires. I have to shift to OD. I still have the factory speed limiter(speedos off so it hits at about 100 not 110). I know I will be bounceing off the limiter real fast. I'm gonna get an EEC tuner to get rid of the speed limiter, but would 3.73s keep me in 3rd gear thru the traps with 50series tires on? Would it be better just to leave the 4.10s and finish well into 4th gear? At this point I'm more talking out loud than seriously thinking about doing it, but I'd still like the info.

GJLS I'm sure you'll read this, what gear are you in on your low 12 second passes and what size tire is that?

I'm still using the stock gears with a 28" slick and it's turning about 5500 thru the traps in 3rd gear

I have a custom 5-7 drop and run the 1/4 mile with 275 40 17 street radials. I have been 12.6 @ 109 with the stock 4.10's but I am going through in 4 th gear. I have also thought about switching to 3.73's. Craig

If I where using tires that short I would think about it, becouse you loose time to make the extra shift when racing, and your cruise rpm when running down the highway would make your bad gas milage even worse. But I keep the tires stock, except for slicks for the track, that I cant afford yet.

Yeah if I could run stock size tires I could make it to the traps in 3rd, but I'm shifting to fourth for a high 13second pass. I'm in the same boat as CP. Our tires are a whole heck of alot smaller and it just won't get it done in 3rd. Thats really what is making me think of the gear change. 4th just won't pull as hard as 3rd, for gods sake it's over dirve and I'm raceing in it. Then the extra time it takes to shift. The smaller tires used to get me to the traps faster N/A but now I'm hitting OD and I might as well hit a brick wall for that matter. I guess I'm gonna try to get some really tall tires see were that puts me and then give you guys more info on the situation.

If you are planning on keeping the low profile tires, you can change your speedo to make the mph right. It is real easy to do. I can't remember because I did it about 4 years ago. Just call Level 10 and speak with Pat. He owns the place and is a great guy. He built my trans for my lightning, and was very easy to work with. Anyway just ask him how to set your speedo. Thanks Craig

I've heard of 3.89's for an 8.8. I think that they would probably be optimal for your situation. I don't know what your future plans are for the truck, but if you don't plan on making it too much faster I'd think about 3.89's. If faster times are planned and you are going to have a similar torque curve, I'd go for the 3.73's.
