Post timing woes(I need some help guys)

I've been goofing with my timing, I had it running really really good. I put the light on it, and the marks are off. The only thing I can figure is that when I put the engine back togeather after popping the head gasket I put the distributor in one tooth off. I if I try to put the engine were it's marked 10*-16* it runs like ****, throttle responce is nonexistant. It almost stalls when you hit the throttle. I possibly could have marked after top dead center marks, but I studyed the crank for a while trying to figure out what way they go. The marks I'm looking to set the timing at go from 0*-30* and I think thats the right way, cause the other side of 0* only goes to 15*. I think I do have the distributor one tooth off, and I don't really know what way to turn it to try to catch another tooth. I guess I'll just have to mess with it till I figure it out. Ugh I'm an idiot.

Did you remove the spout connecter before timing it? If not that is the prob.

Put the#1 cylinder at top dead center and see where your rotor is pointing. It should be on #1 on the cap.

Doesnt really matter if you are a tooth off on the distributer as long as you can get the distributer to rotate it far enough to get the timing mark on. Now if you get your cam off a tooth you have big problems.

Where Y'at LWX, Make sure you are using the no.1 plug wire & you're not getting a cross feed from another wire. Try to look at the mark in line from the pointer to the center of the pulley. If that don't do it, grab the balancer around the marks and try to turn it. If it moves, the outer ring on the balancer spun & the timing marks will be off. If it has spun you have to replace it.
