Question Part thotttle pinging

For a few months now I have had a problem with pinging at part thottle. My truck is basically stock except for an FMS mass air kit and aftermarket exhuast. My timing is at 14* but it also did the same thing at 10*. I have always run 93 octane gas since I bought the truck.
My engine will ping at anywhere between 1/2 and 3/4 thottle. At full thottle it does fine, I have never heard it ping at full thottle. This confuses me because it goes against everything I've ever been told and seen.
This problem is even more noticable when I'm towing my boat. Have any of you ever had this sort of thing happen before? I would appreciate any input at all.

Cool

Did you remember to disconnect the dohicky on the driver side that diconnects the computer while timing? Other wise the computer keeps the timing at around 10 degrees.Look through the archives under timing. Disregard this post if you did already. Later Alex

Recently I had a sound under part throttle that was a lot like pinging, except it would only do it some times and then not do it for a couple of days and then there the pinging was again. My problem was a bad MAP sensor. Now my truck is all better. Just a thought.

I feel your pain. I too have the FMS mass air. They really lean out at WOT. I used to get some detonation in 3rd at partial until I got the inline pump hooked up. I would try to get a Fuel pressure guage hooked to it. It may be your regulator going bad. it might be keeping pressure too low at partial throttle but fine under WOT.
Just some thoughts!

Where Y'at Jason, I had a problem just like that on my 302. It turned out to be dirty injectors. I used the cleaner in a bottle but had to bring it to a mechanic to clean them. I used Techron but alot of guys on here like the Redline cleaner.
I'd set the timing back to 10* till its fixed so you don't hurt the motor. Let us know what you find.

Hey core rider,

I thought I had a detonation issue one time, turns out I was so dense it was my injectors making the noise and I thought it was "pinging." Man I went up and down walls over that.

Anyway, soooooooounds like you could use a fuel filter change. I've been told that 10,000 different times when the truck starts to ping. I've heard you need a special tool to wrench on the f.f., so I just took mine to a dealer and got it changed for 20 bucks or so.

Later bud, good luck!

sounds to me like the egr system is not doing its job. it functions under light to moderate throttle to cool cylinders. but at full throttle it has no function. if its not working properly it would explain why the detonation is only at part throttle.

Yeah, I already changed the filter awhile back and it did help some. I'm pretty certain it's not the injectors, if they make that much noise then they need to be redesigned. I would assume the injectors aren't dirty, because they're only 2 years old.
Maybe I will try some cleaner though. Guess I need to take a look at the EGR system as well. Thanks for the advise everyone.
