Unhappy Cracked Heads

I have a '93 Lightning that was leaking water externally. I thought it was a head gasket, but it was three cracks. Any Problems with GT40 Heads? Defective? And I need a stock head, left side if it makes a difference. Somebody please help me get my lightning back on the road.

THANKS,
JOHNNIE

Cool

Johnnie,

Try posting to the Lightning Mailing List. I think there was someone there recently that had just one head for sale for cheap. Also, you might want to post over on the classifieds board. BTW, it doesn't matter which side - they're the same.

Chesapeake, eh? You know any other Lightning guys around here?

Good luck!

Exclamation

I have a set of GT40s off my built 5.0 for sale. They came off of a 1994 Lightning. They are complete heads with the 1.85/1.55 stock valves and have been lightly ported on the exhaust side. I am asking $400 + shipping for them. I will not part with just one though, sorry.

Cool

Jonnie,
I wouldn't go for a fixed head at all. If it was me, I'd get some good aluminum heats like maybe a TFS. We have a 4630 John Deere that is having head problems. It got too hot and cracked a head once. we couldn't find one anywhere so we had a very reputible machineshop weld and surface ours. 5 headgasketlater we're hunting a head again only now we need pistons, sleeve's, and a crankshaft. It has cost us about 10 grand in the after we get it fixed this time. Trust me, get a new set of heads. It is a great way to "freshen" your engine to boot.

The crack was external below the exhaust ports due to poor casting from factory. (Walls were too thin). The truck ran great just wet on outside of head below exhaust. Was cut out and welded up.
Should be back up and running on 2lst. Thanks for all the input.

Thumbs up

Hey, I'm down here in Elizabeth City, less than an hour from Chesapeake. We have a new 1/8 mile track here that opened last year and is in full swing now.I'm having a ball there, only 20 minutes from my house. Maybe some of ya'll can come down some Saturday.

Hey,

That truck didn't have the rare sun-roof option did it? And heated mirrors?

That JD tractor also probably has 18:1 compression and a turbo on it, right? A diesel is far less forgiving of a poor head surface.

Sounds like fun.....after my house is done! (It would most likely be next summer.)

But back on the plus side it would be more likely that I'd be bringing a MODIFIED Lightning down.

Have fun!
