Post UH OH

I think my truck has developed a rod knock. It sounds as though it's coming from the passenger side valve cover. It only does it some times and then it stops. It doesen't sound real bad and it's not there all the time so... could be something else. It almost sounds like a fan blade hitting something hard plastic. Doesent sound "metalic" like I remeber form other cars knocking. I can't descibe the sound real great but I don't like it. The tempo of it speeds up and slows down with the RPMs. Sounds like it's only coming from 1 cyander. Who knows a good shop in Illinois?

Sounds like a bad lifter. Does it only happen when it's cold. What weight of oil do you use?

Well it had just started doing it when I opend it up one time the other day. I have since figured out that I was a quart low on oil. Now I need to find out how the hell I lost a quart of oil. It dosen't burn it and it doesen't leak, what gives. I just changed it a little while ago so I don't see how I could loose a quart that fast. I really hope I didn't hurt my engine. I would also think that being a quart low on oil would not cause the knock but it hasen't happend since, so problem solved I guess.

The forum was wiggin' out on me... said I didn't exist!

Anyways, one qt low wouldn't of did any damage. Where the qt went is a good question! How many miles on the oil change??

Cool

Hmm....interesting. A buddy of mine just had the same thing happen on his built 5.0 in his stang. With in a week, BAM, no more engine. He just changed the oil a few weeks ago. Started getting a ticking sound like lifters. Loss of a quart of oil with in a couple weeks of oil change. The other day the knocking all of a sudden got really bad and a loss of power. A day or so later the engine quit. We just got done tearing it apart tonight. OH MAN! Destroyed the number three piston. Both push rods had penetrated it as well as the bottom part of a valve was embedded in it. The piston was totally eaten up. Valve spring was broken. Luckily it didn't destroy the Crane 1.6 rr's. Also busted a hole in the block in the cylinder. Also destroyed his GT40 cast iron head. Totally ate up the combustion chamber.

We're thinking that the valve spring broke causing the valve to drop in the cylinder and the rest is history. LITERALLY! We're getting pics of it this week too. I'll see if I can't post them for ya'll to see. We took out the oil drain plug and got about as much antifreeze as we did oil if not more antifreeze than the oil. Sucky weekend for my buddy to say the least. Wasn't even racing the dang thing.

Cool

Sorry. Just wanted to let you know about that problem and to be on the look out for stuff like that. My 351 went out in my 4x4 and didn't give any warning exept for the oil pressure gauge. BTW, how is your oil pressure?
