Post Problem with Timing/Pinging

Hey everyone,

I have seem to run into a problem with my truck pinging. I have the timing set below 10 degrees, probably around 8 degrees and the truck pings no matter what octane fuel I'm using. The idle on the truck also surges in park and in gear. As I'm driving I can feel the truck jerk a little. When I set the timing the truck would be off and I would then remove the spout connector. Start the truck, put the light on it and adjust the distributor. Shut the truck off, put the spout back in and run it. Any help would be apperciated

Thank you,
Chris Hawzen

Chris,

Couple of things to check: are you certain that the plug wires are in the correct order? what is the heat range of the plugs? Does your truck have a mass air conversion or are you still speed density? How much does the truck surge (RPM range)?

The plug wires are in order, I'm still running speed density. As far as the rpm range, it surges between 700 and 1000 rpms.

I had the truck running without any problems when the timing was retarded even further. I was probably close to zero, but I put the light on it and saw how far it was off and wanted the timing in the correct position.

Thank you,

How many Miles on the truck? Almost sounds like the outer ring spun on the harmonic balancer.

The truck has about 84,000 on it. What I don't understand is when I retard the timing the truck runs fine, but when I put the timing at the stock setting, 10 degrees BTDC it pings and doesn't run well at all.

Thank you,

The lines on the harmaonic balancer have "Shifted" around the center hub and crankshaft possibly. The balancer is actually a steel hub, and a steel ring separated by a layer of rubber. It sounds like the ring has slipped on the rubber.

Is there anyway to look and tell? Would you recommend me taking the truck to the shop and having them take a look at it?

Thanks,

Chris, Ken here. The first thing I would do is, pull the #1 plug out, and move the crank to TDC, by use of a compression tester or TDC gauge. Then look to see where the indicator on the balancer is. This should give you an idea if the balancer has slipped. Believe me, it does happen!. Good Luck, KEN

Cool

Hey Chris, Check your EGR valve. It can go bed and makes a rattle like detonation but its that valve. Mine went bad. I also changed my balancer at 90,000 miles, so yours might need attention also. You might also need to have a leakdown test run. If your getting oil in the combustion chambers from either blow-by or valve seals it will detonate no matter what your timing is set at. Just a few thoughts for you. Hope these help, Rod K.

This may be a dumb question, but did you pull the spout connector when you set the timing? Sorry, just had to ask.

Oops, reread your original post, so disregard!

I agree with the spun balancer theory. One of you guys be kind and see where the keyway is relative to TDC (0 degrees). I'd do it, but I can't quite see 2300 miles...

Hey guys,

Thanks for you help, at least I have a better idea as to what is going on. Tomorrow, my car club here at school has got a dyno for a day. I'm gonna have the guys at the shop look at it and see what they say. I gotta say, I don't post many messages, but when I do there is always someone who has a answer or can at least has an idea as to what is going on.

Thank again,
Chris Hawzen

Hey Guy, Pull the #1 plug and turn the engine over to TDC, then pull the dist. cap and see where the rotor is pointing, is it at #1? If not your timing chain has jumped. Replace it.
