Post Inline fuel pump?

I read some where the other day that you should not have your inline pump before your fuel filter because it makes it that much harder for the pump. It said to let the intank pump push it through the filter and then let the inline pump push it to the motor... I'm not sure if it would make a dif. on our trucks, but it made a dif with the mustang I was reading about...I can not remember where I read that at...I went and looked at mine and the inline is before the filter...the only reason i am wondering is that I am trying to work out some fuel problems...Any info out there can help thanks guys....
