Post Help pinging after powerdyne installed

I installed my powerdyne yesterday and took it for a drive and the pinging was horrible @10 degrees so i backed it down to 5 but it was still bad so i went to 0 and all was well so today i put 1 range colder plugs in and put it back to 5 degrees now it only pings at the top of second but with only 5 degrees of timimg the performance isn't that great how can i get somemore timing out of it ? do i need a timing controller or maybe have a custom chip made. The motor is stock the exhaust has been changed after the cats to a single 3" and it has a msd 6al with ngk plugs (TR6)
The boost gauge is showing 5 psi @5000 and it looks like the fuel presure is going up around 80 psi under boost but my gauge only reads to 60 and it broke

back the timing down to 3-4 degrees. then buy the msd btm so you can return to 10 degrees base timing. install a 180 tstat and be sure to run 92 or higher octane. this has taken care of my pinging troubles. later.

DITTO. Make sure you get a map sensor for progressive boost retard. Make an effort to use the best gas available too.

Question

GJLS, I just got my Powerdyne in the mail today, and everything looks pretty nice, the
airbox top is the only thing that I question
as far as the fit (looking factory). How did
it come out looking when everything was installed? Also it looks like the MSD BTM and bypass tube are must haves! Kevin also
said we should get electric fans to get rid of the vibration transmitted into the crank, did you notice that vibration? Good luck with the tuning! I'm right behind you....any tips for the install?

Joe C had the dubious honor of seeing me standing in between the radiator and the front of the engine while installing the Powerdyne on his truck this past weekend.

This is a great position for reaching the top of the engine and is a piece of cake when you remove the mechanical fan and install electrics.

IF YOU GET TH MSD BTM TO COMPLMENT THE MSD 6A, YOU DONT NEED TO GET THE MAP SENSOR. THIS IS USED FOR THE CRANE SETUP. THE MSD RETARDS THE TIMING ON ITS OWN. IT DOES NOT NEED A SEPARATE SENSOR. I USE IT AND SO FAR ITS BEEN GREAT. IF YOU ALREADY HAVE THE 6A BOX I THINK THE BTM IS ANOTHER 150.00 OR SO. LATER.

The kit is done very well every thing fit and i didn't have to mod anything. As for the air box lid i thought it was a poor design but i didn't use it i modded my ram air setup to work with it here is some photo's of the allmost finished job i still need to go back and clean up some of the wiring. I ordered the msd btm today and am building a boost bypass later this week i got a bypass vavle from a turbo beetle (I work at a VW dealership) and it looks just like that 150.00 bosch valve everyone is selling

B4THUNDER i didn't notice any vibration in the fan setup i suspect the vibration he was talking about was caused from where he said he had to trim the fan to clear i didn't have any clearnce problems it all just bolted right in

Nice pics of your install. This brought back memories of a year ago when I did mine. My fan hit the bolt on the idler adjuster pulley too but only during boost. I noticed a horrible vibration at the water pump from that spacer that you install to clear the blower belt. Ive heard of Vortech guys with the same problem.Thats the main reason I went to electrics. Now I'm glad I went to electrics, they are a much better system.
Time to get that 2.7" pulley to get that boost up to 8psi. HEE Hee

Hi, everyone. What kind of electric fans are we talking about? The flexalite 210's? I noticed on their website that they have a fan setup for a GM truck that moves more air. Do the 210's move enough air for our trucks? I don't do a lot of sitting in traffic, but I don't want to overheat either.

I know that I am full of questions, but I have been considering doing this for some time. Wouldn't it also be possible to have the pcm control the fan through a relay?

Cool

GJLS, those are some great photos of your install, and the Powerdyne looks great. I assembled the airbox top last night and it looks pretty good when all is said and done,
it did seem alittle warped as far as the edges of the thing...I'll see how it works!
I do like that ram-air setup you have!
Ah yes, the fans...the only dual flexlite fan I see says for up to 250hp (I believe?!)
wouldn't that cause overheating problems? I don't have the BIG radiator on my truck (like the towing packaged trucks) so I wonder if that smaller radiator and electirc fans are up to the test???
Good, luck with the new toys fellas! I'll
be documenting my install as well with my digital camera...maybe in the future Jeff may want to use them for the newsletter.

Yeah those fans passed the test real good this summer, hardly ever come on, of course I have the big radiator in mine. Another list member put the flex 210s on also and his fans ran a lot cuz he had the smaller radiator and the hot Virgina heat. You will not be driving around making 250hp all the time so the fans work great. If I pulled a trailer or heavy boat and lived in Colorado or something I would keep the clutch fan setup. Otherwise get it off tomorrow. HeHe!
Besides I think there is about 10hp at full throttle to be gained.
