Reputation Points?

Did a search and it appears a few other members have the same question. Hope I am in the correct section. What are they?

In other boards it allows users to rate the reputation of others. They can give or remove rep points from another user based upon that person's posts. So if someone posts a lot of useful information, you can give them rep. After awhile, they've accumulated a ton of rep that shows their status on the board (ie, if this person talks, they usually know what they're talking about). Likewise, you can remove rep from people that troll, trash talk, and basically ruins threads. It's a good way of discriminating between the good and bad on a board, as there are a lot of negative people who could've been members for years, and have thousands of posts.

Ok, I think I understand the concept. So, basically it helps the new unsuspecting board user from getting bad info? Because anyone who has been on the board for a while knows who's opinions/advice to head and who's advice/opinion requires tall boots. Is there a key somewhere to decipher the symbols under our Avatars?

That's basically it. If you hold the mouse cursor over each icon, it should have a message box pop up describing the icon.

So, ealier today there was a scale icon beneath my Avatar. Why did it dissapear? I didn't have an opportunity to drag the mouse cursor over it to determine what it meant. So, pardon me for asking what it meant.

The scale is there to choose to give reputation points to that post's author. You only have a few to give out, so it's very selective. The scale isn't there because it looks like they disabled reputations.

Brian,

what keeps a user from giving another user rep points just to give them rep points, for example: if two users where good friends on here and every time they get on they give each other rep points just to help each others rep disregarding how they post. likewise what keeps a user from taking away rep points from another user just because they may have some beef with them , or whatever the reason they don't care for that user.

For the most part it's a popularity contest. I've found on most other boards that they mean little to nothing about the worth of a poster or his/her posts. In fact they often mislead folks into thinking that since someone has a good rep, they are reliable and you can trust what they say when in reality the guy just posts a lot of porn in the Off Topic section and people rep him for it.
