It's basically low speed roadracing held in a parking lot.

Autocross is one car at a time on a timed course lined by cones. You hit a cone, and it's a 2 second penalty. You usually get 3-4 runs at the course.

Autocross is different from road racing in that the speeds are slower (max usually 50-60), and the courses are more technical (i.e., more turns). Also, you don't need any special safety equipment to autocross -- just a helmet and your vehicle's seat belt is all that's necessary. This means that you can "race" just about any road-worthy vehicle.

Here is a good FAQ on autocrossing:

Man I love the new forums! Thanks Jeff/Jerry! Home run dudes!

SVT SE-R gave an excellent definition, so here's an additional link about autocrossing that might help out a bit.

Thumbs up

Autocrossing is more addictive than crack! I run my '99 Cobra in local events. We have a very large lot so speeds are a little higher than a typical auto-x. We have had courses over 1 mile long.

Ain't it the truth That's a large lot! What kind of times does that generate for a Gen 2? The biggest lot we have in my area is at our sports complex (KC Royals & Chiefs dual stadiums). The one lot we use is about 15 or so acres and takes about 60 - 65 seconds to run.

Roger, I run my Cobra only. We have had courses so long that TTD (Top Time of the Day) was in the 90 second range! We have some very fast guys (several National Champs.) So I was over 100 seconds and I am one of the faster F Stock guys. For me, typically courses are in the 70-90 second range in the big lot and 50-60 in the other smaller lots. I like the long ones.

Regards,
-Steve
