Post DSL or Cable............???

I'm dial-up--I know, you feel so sorry for me.

New DSL offer--free modem, activation, and installation and then $49.95/month for two years.

Cox cable: pay $175.00 for hook-up and then $39.95/month for no set number of months.

Please; pros and cons...

Thanks,

Dan

I got cable and my fiance has DSL. My cable is a little bit faster. I like it better.

One vote for cable!

It depends how close you are to the phone company substation. With dsl you will get speeds at least a good as cable, but probably much better. If you are running an operating system like win 2000 or 98 there are some settings that need to be modified to maximize your speed. I just got dsl.

Cable. So far I've never heard of DSL as fast as cable. I know they advertise it, but the numbers in tests don't bear that out.

It has alot to do with the area you live in but most of the time cable is faster than a dsl line of the same price

go to www.dslreports.com and there is a page there where you can see what speeds of people in your area are getting

Thanks guys. I really appreciate the responses. I think Cox cable may get a new hook-up. Somethin's gotta give!

It goes either way for me. My moms house has cable, and my dad has DSL. Cable is a lot faster(100k/sec Dsl, 250k/sec cable, but thats because im all alone on my node. Once more ppl start gettin cable in my area, Im sure my cable speed will drop dramatically. I reccomend looking into who has cable in your area, and asking them how fast it is, and how many ppl have it.

See that's the thing though like he just said.

I used to be a DSL technician for Pacbell, and if I remember correctly, dsl speed is a constant steady rate, yet cable speed will go down when more people will hook up. I know it won't be for a long while in most areas, but I just keep seeing in my head tons and tons of peeps getting cable and eventually it sinking well below dsl speeds.

SO, slow and steady, or fast and unpredictable?

Your choice.
somebody chime in if i was wrong on any of this.

L'Rod,

Broadband is crack for net surfing, plain and simple.

Both DSL and Cable are good. I have buds with DSL yet opted for cable. The extra $10/month AND two-year commitment is what killed it for me.

As for installation charges for cable, HOGWASH. Many cable companies run free installation specials and/or have do-it-yourself kits available. Some also have discounted rates if you have regular (TV) cable service with them. If you can install a chip in your Lightning, you can configure the network settings for cable. If you decide to do it yourself and get in a jammy, drop ole Speedy an email before you start so we can exchange numbers. My fee is much cheaper.

Once you get connected, check out Speedtest, bookmark it, and run periodic tests to monitor your download speeds.

I have cable and love it. I just did that speed test thing. I got 2.1 megabits a second. it compared my speed with the average cable speed for the western us and 56k modems. my speed is close to double the speed of the average cable and maybe like 50 times faster than 56k. kinda hard to judge that one since its so small. like everyone has said, the bad thing about cable is evryone near you that has it shares the same connection. but i know 4 other people besides me on my court that have cable, i was the first, and it hasnt slowed down. i know i probly share with more people than just those that are in my court but since i got it, it hasnt slowed down imo.

Just did the speedtest thing again. This time at the time our traffic is usually heaviest. (7:15pm) This time was 2.2Mb/sec compared to 2.5 early New Year's morning. Test sez that compared to any connection worldwide, mine is fantastic. Hope it stays that way, I've had it for a few years now.
