Question Computer prob....help

If anyone can lend their assistance, I'd appreciate it!

I have a laptop that I moved from it's location before Christmas and then tried it after Christmas. It worked fro a short while then it locked up. I rebooted it and it now says that the operating system cannot be found.
I bought Nortons virus program and booted from it and it shows no virus. Could this be a hard drive problem? I have stuff I just put on there that is not backed up and don't want to lose.
Any idea's?????
Thanks

when you get the message hard drive not found. push the power button sometime that will work.

You may want to take the battery out, then pull the hard drive out and make sure the terminals are clean.

Call the computer manufacturer, they can guide you through the procedure.

I pulled the HD and the contacts, not much there, seem to be fine. The message says Operating system not found. I could do a total reload from rescue disks but, that will wipe everything out.

If you are running Win9X or WinME you can make a bootdisk from another system and attempt to boot from the floppy and then do a "dir c:" and see if the drive and data are still present. If they are we should be able to get the system back up and running without reloading the whole system.

Let me know if you need anything.
