The valve seals that were loose, must have shrouded the valve stems enough to not allow the oil to get to the stem. If you have bad seals, it will suck the oil down the valve guide and into the cylinder during idle, when the vacuum is the strongest.
That is one of the first telltale signs of engine problems. Blue smoke at idle, valve seals and guides, blue smoke during accelleration, bad rings.
